I went ahead and made this a separate thread since it got lost in my other one about my boost issues.
Is there a way I can test the EGR valve? the volvo dealer shop foreman said that the EGR valve should "fail closed" when unplugged. So when they unplugged it, started the engine, and it still flowed gases they declared it as sticking and faulty.
But yet I keep reading about all these EGR tests that can be done through the volvo PTT software and they didn't mention anything about testing it that way.
So is unplugging it a valid test?
Also there has never been any EGR related codes, wouldn't a flow issue (to high or to low) set a code?
Also, can a EGR that is not working properly cause high EGT?
I'm just suspicious of their diagnosis since this valve is 3 weeks old. The cast iron on the valve hasn't even had a chance to get rusty yet. lol
This is on a 2012 D11
Thanks
How to test the EGR valve?

If you unplug the valve, it should stay closed. So if you put a glove over the EGR cooler exhaust outlet and it inflates when you start the truck, then the valve is not staying closed because spring is broken or something. The PTT way to test EGR valve I think is to test if the valve will open on command. So basically one test is to make sure it stays closed when it's supposed to, and the other is to make sure it opens up properly when actuated.
Code doesn't always pop up. I had high EGT before mine was replaced.Texan4Life and QUALITYTRUCK Thank this. -

Well I unplugged it, then disconnected the EGR tube right before it goes in the charge air/intake. that was the easiest place. With the truck running I could hold my hand over the tube and I could feel it build up pressure instantly and when I released my hand a puff of air comes out so I didn't bother sticking a glove over it, it would have easily inflated it.
TamerX replaced it under warranty and overnighted me a replacement which was great, until I opened it up when I was ready to install it. The part they sent looks like something you would buy on craigslist, like someone pulled it out of a junkyard, shot some paint on it, and mailed it to me. The paint is flaking off, the inside of the valve is painted, the electrical connection where it it going into the solenoid is partially melted, black motor oil in the oil ports, they even painted the wire harness. The first one they sent me looked nothing like this, it was clean and at least looked remanned. And to top it all off the oil port locations are not indexed/oriented properly so even if I wanted to install it, I can't.
Still waiting on a call back to try and get a refund and then I'm going to go get one from Volvo.

Looks like the actuator is attached 90 degrees different from the original.

The harness doesn't look too bad to me. I had to get a new one from Volvo for my D16 when I got a new EGR valve from a 3rd party. They shouldn't be terribly expensive, considering everything for the D16 is priced like it's gold plated. Here's the part I got, might not be the one you need, though.

Can you pull off the bolts and rotate it 90 degrees to proper orientation? It still leaves the question of if it was properly tested if it wasn't even installed correctly, though. -
I thought about fixing it myself, but it wouldn't surprise me if this one did not work properly either. They agreed to a refund and rightfully so in my opinion. They wanted both of their valves back so they are sending me a core, and then I'll mail both of their valves back. My local volvo dealer had the EGR in stock so I bought that and put it on. After installed it, I tested it, and it did not pass any air.
