I already use earplugs. Have done for years. I just lay down for half an hour to see if I could lull myself into an afternoon nap and it didn't work terribly well, though I did manage to sort of drift for a little while. I will keep practicing. I'm fine if I have a regular schedule, but this new job sounds like sometimes I will start at midnight and be required to try and catch an odd couple of hours sleep here and there between deliveries throughout the day, maybe getting back home in the afternoon. That after starting at 7am and finishing around 6pm. I would not do a midnight start on the same night I had a 6pm finish, but even if it was the next night, it's going to throw my routine into totaly chaos. So the only way to get through it might be developing the ability to catch what sleep I can at odd hours and for relatively short periods.

I have never been able to sleep on cue. I'm not cut out for elogs either. I can use my 14 hour window, 11 hrs driving; then shut down for 10 hours and not sleep even for a minute. 10 hr. break over, then drive another 11 hrs. The doctor said I should have died years ago. Those coast-to-coast runs were made for me before elogs. I'm not bragging about this because I know it's not normal or legal. I've hauled a load maybe from Texas to Central Florida, unload, reload produce in the Everglades and deliver it to West Virginia, then drive into Ohio before my body said I needed sleep. I retired in September, so don't have to deal with it anymore. Lucky, no wrecks during my career.

I count how many footsteps it takes to reach a destination around my town. Never completed the imaginary destination on foot. What was the thread about Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Back when I was wound tighter than a 2 dollar watch I had good luck with a "self-hypnosis" tape. After a few listens it would put me to sleep in less than a minute. It was hilarious at first, the guy spoke with exaggerated animation, but it worked great.

The biggest problem you are going to run into is you are already taking a pill to sleep. If you have to take it to get a good night sleep their is not alot you can do. Your body needs that pill to sleep. I would just get use to being tired that's what I did. Plus alot of caffeine on the really bad days.

yeah, that's what i'm afraid of. it would be great to be able to say "ok, i'm getting dangerously fatigued now. i'm just gonna have an hour nap", but i don't know i'll ever be able to. counting footsteps to places i walk around town might help. i have a catalogue delivery round at the moment. i could count the letter boxes i put catalogues in. and maybe a tape of some sort with a hypnotic induction type thing. caffeine tablets as a last resort (i understand they're really bad for your heart).

Just ask the FMCSA, they will tell you when you're tired and exactly when it's time to rest!!!
