    Hello friends,
I need your help in my situation. I bought a semi truck from a private seller with Texas title. I live in Pennsylvania and i want to lease my truck to a company based in Indiana. I will use Indiana based company plates and permits. Truck title was issued under seller’s company name and he signed on the back of title as seller and fill my personal name n address as buyer. My Pennsylvania address.
Now how i get that title transfer under my name. Should I transfer it from Pennsylvania dmv or indiana dmv can transfer it since i will be getting plates n permit from indiana based company?
I have a Pennsylvania driving license with my Pennsylvania residence address.
    Please advise.
    Thanks in advance

Ok read this carefully, it is how it works.

The title is for the asset ownership of the vehicle, it may or may not have the lien company's name on it to show that there is a debt to that company on it.

This has nothing to do with the plates to operate the truck, the plates can be from anywhere. Those plates (apportioned) are an indicator that you are registered to pay road tax with the collection of the initial tax coming from the state that issues the plate. The plates and taxes are a federally mandated system, the states abide by it through an agreement to accept vehicles from foreign (states) entities, like in your case Indiana recognizes the title from PA.

So you get your title transferred to yourself with your name on it IN PENNSYLVANIA and you get a copy (xerox) if the title to show the carrier who will get the plate for you from their DMV (INDIANA) and you will get the registration from them (called a cab card) to show proof of registration, not the title.

Do what Ridgeline said. I would just add that you may have to pay sales tax to Pennsylvania at the time you apply for the title.

Nope he doesn't, PA also has the rolling stock exemption because it is used in interstate commerce.

Lucky. My state, Georgia, imposes sales tax on truck purchases unless the buyer already has authority. If you buy intending to lease onto a carrier you have to pay the tax. Came as an unwelcome surprise to me.

I live in Pennsylvania and just bought a tri axle dump truck. I had to pay sales tax on it.

If you already have your operating Authority you may not have to pay tax, but if you purchase it without having your Authority in place I think you will have to pay sales tax.

And yes, register the title in Pennsylvania. Out of state titles I think are almost a little easier in Pennsylvania because as long as the seller notarized his signature you have no problem going to the notary and they will process your title. Simple process.

New Jersey requires that in order to plate it there, you must have a New Jersey title.

If you use it for interstate, it is exempt from sales tax.

Pennsylvania and Georgia both have this exemption.

You need to make a declaration when you title the vehicle, you may even claim it after the fact.

If the dmv says otherwise, get them to check it because it is a law in both of them states.

Nope. Believe me I tried. You have to have your own MC number to get them to accept your title application without paying sales tax. Then you have to have liability coverage and IRP in you own company name before they will release the title.

I applied for and got an MC number and gave it to them. They issued a new Georgia title, but held it pending IRP registration. When they saw it was a Landstar cab card and license plates I had to go back and pay the sales tax before they would release the title. My finance company was getting antsy about the title in the meantime too.

That's kinda the trouble with trucking. And little shortcut or dodge you can think of has already been tried by someone else and they're ready for it.
