You got screwed, if you were under a lease contract, you are entitled to that exemption. The states that have the exemption have to recognize a lease contract under another authority.

The reason for the exemption goes back to rail road days where companies had to pay taxes on their cars by one state so they would find a friendly state that would not tax them. The Feds got involved and told the states they can't charge taxes. This also happens with aircraft now, you purchase an aircraft for commercial purposes and used in interstate commerce, then it is exempt from use or sales tax.

Your lease contract is all that is needed to present to the dmv, nothing else.

I have had issues with my sos (Michigan's DMV) on a lot of issues, those girls behind the counter are dumber than bricks and robots who refuse to think. I had to get a title for a 1966 Cadillac, I had the inspection report from my cop shop, I had the bill of sale from Vermont and pictures of the car. The ***** behind the counter said I can not get a title for the car in the state without the title from Vermont. It took me a week going to nine different places to find some one who would open the book to see what the process is for an out of state vehicle with a bill of sale.

Thanks much for all your information. I have another issue with plates. Actually i am transferring my old truck plate to this truck. That plate was also issued under same company i will be working now. I sold my old truck and got this Freightliner. So now when my company tried to transfer old truck plate to this FRT they couldn’t do it because this Freightliner truck’s VIN no. Still active with other fleet. Seller had this truck leased to Landstar and it had indiana plates under Landstar authorities. I called seller and told him problem he said he has no clue of this. He mailed his Landstar plates and ifta permits last Friday. Should i call Landstar plates and permits department? It’s totally frustrating I can’t register my truck after paid all money to seller.
    Please advise
    Thanks a lot in advance

If you're leasing on just title it where it's cheapest. I bought a power until from VA and just paid 10 dollars to switch it into my name.

If you are an ls bco, yes call them. They can remove the old owner from their records.

Any company you had to send them proof of the purchase like a copy of the title app or a copy of the title when you registered it under the authority.

So are you under a lease with ls?

Yes, i am leasing it to a small fleet company in indiana. I worked with them earlier as owner operator with my old truck.
The current truck i bought this was leased to Landstar ranger so they have its VIN no. actuve in their system. It also had indiana plates with Landstar. I remember seller took the plates with him after deliver this truck to me. Thanks for help

OK so it has not a thing to do with landstar, they don't hold the registration with the state on a specific vin, the state only can do that.

Once you have ownership with the truck, proof with the title, then the state has to issue a new plate or transfer the old one - their IRP division If I remember right.

If the company is having issues with it, then the company needs to deal with it, not you. As long as the title is in your name, in your domicile, the transfer of the asset (truck) is reconginized by your state there isn't an issue about the VIN being active by the state.

I never had this issue with Indiana, 60% of my trucks are based out of a place on the border of Indiana and Ohio in Indiana. The other 40% are based here in Michigan.
