    If you open it up all the way, there is a cam on the handle that should allow the spool to spin. When you do that, you can pull the slack out of it. Pull it tight, then start cranking.

    Easy peasy. :)

    if u flip the ratcheting system around.. the handle will tighten downwards rather than upwards
