If you open it up all the way, there is a cam on the handle that should allow the spool to spin. When you do that, you can pull the slack out of it. Pull it tight, then start cranking.
Easy peasy.

Well the good news is it’s hot enough outside my truck isn’t turning off on me, will resume my training when it cools down considering all I got are long sleeve shirts and denim overalls
