As I understand it the only Yelllow operations currently working is working current freight through to its final destination. Once this has finished all Yellow Operations will cease!

Pretty much finished moving freight this past Thursday-Friday. Fuel cards shut off, hotel lodging cards shut off. Yards, and gates closed and locked up tight. From what I have read, just a handful of people left in corp. hq, compiling equipment list, any orphan freight, fuel inventory, etc.

It’s not like they took the trucks and the freight and went home. Both are still out there and are moving somehow.

My fourth week of CDL school now. The instructor doesn't even need to look at me when doing offset lane change, parallel park and straight line backing except for minor corrections. That's the maneuvers they teach there. They don't teach the alley docking maneuver. They alternate between groups of classmates so that some classmates drive the trailer some days and the other days we practice pre-trip inspections (I got a 100% on Friday) and yard maneuvers.

Overall a very good experience and the instructors make sure you're learning. You aren't allowed to have your phones during class, only during lunch break. They're actually more strict with the free pull ups and get-out-and-looks than the DMV is. They don't allow any free pull ups during yard evals but the DMV allows for two.

Driving the tractor-trailer I nearly hit a van. Thank god I didn't. ran over a curb with the bobtail but since it wasn't an actual road test I just got a 79 (passing). During the actual road test it would be an automatic fail.

    You will
    Be fine

the drivers with new CDLs don’t get paid nearly as much as the experienced guys, so there’s always companies that want new drivers

I no longer drive , I work with a company that investigates underground storage tank leaks .
and they always like to hire new employees right out of school , since they can pay them half of what a person with years of experience gets paid .

Depending on your background, there are companies that hire only native born citizens with squeaky clean credit criminal and driving records .
One company I know of also does the background check on your siblings and parents .

owner of the company said years ago they hired drivers and then did the background check and got the security clearance
Now they have to find people who can pass the background checks and teach them how to drive a truck .
Of the 26 people in the CDL class , only 3 were even eligible to apply for the job , and two of them didn’t want to fool with all The paperwork.

Just to set the record straight, Yellow is the lowest paying LTL company out there. The only upside is the Healthcare Plan through the Teamsters and lazy drivers that destroy equipment didn't have to worry about being fired. Many of these same drivers would complain about the money Yellow "took" from them when they in fact voted for it. I used to point that out when somebody popped off about it to use that as justification to be a miserable, thieving, POS.

The fewer trucks available, the higher rates will climb, to a point.

Not at Yellow, right? Did you mean to post this in a different topic? Sounds like you're doing ok in the class. :)

Back when I last drove, the trucking industry had so much contempt for job applicants that you had to get a notorized document with three personal references telling each potential employer what you were doing each time you took 2 or more weeks off from any kind of employment. I found it a humbling and even embarrassing experience to ask friends and acquaintanences to help me fill out these silly forms, simply because I'm responsible enough with my money to where I don't have to spend every week between cradle to grave, working. I'd have multiple cases where I worked a year, maybe 6 months, maybe 2 years, then I'd go overseas and travel the world. Been to 28 countries by now. Nobody follows me around to make sure I'm not involved in immorality or crime every moment I'm not wage-slaving. Sometimes I couldn't find three people that have closely stalked me during my time off because they don't allow relatives to do this for you, so no job for me!
I don't know if they still do this. It's so stupid. What's wrong with taking time off? Play video games—or read books. It's really amazing what you can do if you're smart enough to not buy cigarettes and lottery tickets with your last pennies while working. Bank your money, and then enjoy life after a year or so of hard work. Apparently we little people aren't supposed to do things like that. It's work-work-work, or else you'll have to answer to the man. They figure that if you took time off, you probably spent it in jail or used it for a drug operation even though if anything nefarious happened, there would obviously be a government record of it somewhere anyway. o_O And no, I didn't get government checks during all of this.
