If you plan on going in this direction, you might want to see if anyone will hire you first. Most places only want recent grads from a CDL school. You may have to go to school anyway.

A CDL means nothing if no one will hire you.

If you are going to get into the industry do it right the first time. This will save you lots of time and money. Like the other poster said, most companies will only hire you if you have attended an accredited school. This is mainly due to their insurance.

Otherwise everyone would just rent a truck, its a lot cheaper! Don't cheat yourself, get the proper training.

Be sure to comb through this website as there are others who have went this route and have posted their results. Actually they are more less asking what to do now!

place an ad on Craig's list. offer at the very minimum of $50 per hour for at least 4 hours. that'll be $200.

but do not expect calls right away, but you can go this route.

more importantly, as stated, who will actually hire you??

sure, you "may" get your CDL, but how much practice can you afford to pay each time??

you really may want to see if the local driving school near you has "ala-cart" training schedules, some do, some don't.

At the DMV office in San Bernardino, Ca. there was/is a guy that has a truck/trailer for rent for people wanting to test out. Something like $200 to use it. A legal vehicle, he had it parked nearby with a phone number to call. I've heard of other guys doing this in other states. You might want to call your local DMV. An O/O won't feel comfortable letting a newbie test out using his "baby".

There are a few places in my neck of the woods that rents out trucks for testing. It was about $400 bucks to practice in their truck for two hours and then as much time at the DMV as it took to get you in to test. They actually set up the test for you and can get in quicker that way than making your own appointment.

As far as worrying about not being from an accredited school, I didn't worry about it and it worked out fine for me. And almost everyone I know that drives did it the same way. The big companies may shy away but tons of small places will hire you on.
