I hear ya Oldnew, and when the guys and gals that have spent a fair amount of time behind the wheel spend time in front of the keyboard, well, we are indeed the ones who benefit!
I can understand the act of insulting someone for poor grammar or spelling being frowned upon. What about the insults that have been thrown at posters? I just read through this entire thread, and I seemed to notice a common trait. Some are insulting posters for correcting grammar (not saying grammar correction is good or bad). Yet, they themselves are 'looking down their noses' and being insulting and rude with little tact just the same as others. This is normally called being a hypocrite (I actually had to look up the spelling on that one, LOL ). Yet it seems to go mostly unnoticed. I have not read the posts regarding the start of this grammar issue and really do not care to it seems. Now, I have to wonder about something? This industry is all about change. Is it not? Learning the changes is required of everyone, regardless of what education level they have. So the reasoning of having only a grade 5 education is not really a valid response. Every day we have to deal with and learn to change with the rules. So why can everyone not take the time to learn to improve their spelling and grammar? Realistically, the DOT officers can issue fines for illegible records. Which can include spelling and grammar, at least if they want to be REALLY picky. It is a good thing to work on bettering yourself whenever one can. Many times those that refuse vocally to learn and change are being plain lazy or feel that they cannot learn whatever is new. For those that are scared of change due to feeling inadequate, there is always someone willing to help. I hope these persons do not feel that they cannot ask their questions. Those that are lazy, well, they just need a kick in the rear to motivate them. We have all been at the point of needing a swift kick in the rear. As for those with a LD. That is a "learning disability" for anyone who wondered. Again, there are typically more than enough people who are happy to try to help you understand an issue. I have not singled anyone out and have tried to stay as unbiased and general as possible. If anyone feels singled out hurt, then I am sorry as it is not my intention. I wanted to voice some concerns and observations to maybe get some thoughts going. A good conversation is good, personal insults are seemingly childish. I'm just saying.
"Irregardless" is a double negative and is incorrect in the usage you are attempting. In fact, I'm not completely certain it is a valid word, despite its pervasive use by those who consider themselves educated. And thank you for answering my question regarding "LD." I wasn't sure whether you were DisLexic, were speaking of suffering from a Latter Day Saint in the family and forgot to include the S or were referencing a Labrador Dog, which, my mother will tell you, is a creature to be tolerated only because the children love it.
Corrected, thank you. I actually looked that one up and found it has been used since 1910 or so. No wonder it is in such common usage by everyone. I concur on the Labrador dogs, they are gentle, yet, dumb as a post sometimes.
Hey...I thought dyslexic was slyxexdic?? Okay, so I am NOT making fun of those who suffer from dyslexia. My eldest son has dyslexia, and he suffered terribly in school. Not only do words and letters get jumbled, but also numbers. He had such a horrible time in grade school, transposing letters, numbers, and even whole sentences. He now does very well, as a free-lance tattoo artist. Has anyone else ever noticed that those with LD's, are VERY artistic? And EXTREMELY intelligent??
