Howdy y'all!
INTRO if you want to read
Well this is going to be another noob, looking for answers of all the familiar questions that are typically hard to find, sure there is a thread on here that may answer the questions, but honestly, so hard to find them, I'd rather just start fresh, and am sure somebody will post oh.. should of looked here and such... well, sorry ahead of time.
Guess my story starts off back in '92 after leaving the Army. I have pretty much always been a cook/Chef. Seemed a fun career, and so stuck it out, got ahead etc. Lately been bored stiff, tired of it. Not all to often would i think to go for my CDL, it has cropped up a few time a year , but always said ah, i will pass.
Now I enjoy road travel, do it almost every two weeks, in my dodge ram van, love the open road, and I know working the road, and playing the road are entirely two different beasts. Still after this past year, of unemployment, just realized the simple fact that I'd be quite happy on the road, would make sense right, yet still was not sure I'd go for the CDL and stuff. Till my Sister called about a month ago, asked me would you like too... see my B-inlaw is also looking at doing OTR driving, but wants to do partner driving... well seemed the table was set, after all these years, finally going for it, leaving the kitchen, and going on the road, sounds great to me.
Last month been reading, researching, googling and such, keep ending up at this forum... a lot of good information here, but still lot of questions needed answered for me. So again, thanks for listening, and thanks for any advice, links, or what ever, it is all appreciated on this end, and as always looking to pay it forward one day!
So heading to TX (its where my B-inlaw is situated.. I lose the house, is is bought etc) Heading to ATDS Trucking school, and so far USA Trucking seems to be our goal as company driving goes. Not to sure if USA
trucking is a sound company, see a lot of mixed reviews, and have not landed in TX to see other options at the school.
So for now just wanted to ask some general questions
My first question is, since I am a resident in RI, heading to TX, will I be able to get a CDL in TX, will I face issues with residency? I will be living at My Sisters, and plan to register my POV in TX, so just wondering if I need to worry about this or not?
Being on the road, there are expenses, lot of expenses, and was curious how fueling works, maintenance, break downs and such are typically handled? Like what expenses are paid by the company.. any meals, tolls, etc. and what expenses are out of my pocket?
I have a lot of "RV" type gear that would be great in the rig, but since i won't own the rig, can i still use my own rv type gear? Microwave and such, a fridge freezer gear etc? I mean when they assign me a truck and such, is that my responsibility, can I leave gear in it and come back to same truck , of course hoping the company has a no slip seat policy of course ?
Also when assigned a truck, no slip seat, can you park it at home? if not how does getting to work work, do you drive yourself to pick up the rig? Vice versa.. getting home and such.
Generally speaking, I have a million to zillion questions, but for now those seem to cover what I can not seem to find googling, or on you tube, so any ideas, links, or suggestions, or what have you again is greatly appreciated.
Thankyou Yawppy

40 percent of your questions are for your recruiter. (Maintenance, home time parking, fueling ect..) if its a lifestyle question, ask away someone will answer.

I went to ATDS years ago...
Check out the Texas DPS website, pretty much you just need some utility bills in your name and have your sister write up a lease agreement.
Huge choice of companies, I know @JonTheHulk recently started at USA from ATDS. Depends on what you want to run imo. -
I will try to help answer your questions:
1. As far as getting a TX CDL, as long as you can provide a physical address down there it should not be a problem getting a TX CDL.
2. As far as maintenance, fuel, and breakdown, if you are company they will take care of all of that. You will be issued a fuel card, some companies will send you a fuel stop and how many gallons to get through Qualcomm. If you have any breakdown issues, just call your company, tell them your location and problem, they will either tell you to go to a TA, Petro, Love s or a preferred vendor if its something like a tire, light, or reefer unit issue if you re pulling a reefer. Or sometimes they may send some one out to you for a repair. If the truck is broke down, they ll either send a service truck or wrecker out to get you. If it has to go in a shop, the company will either pay for the hotel and breakdown pay or reimburse you for the room
3. As far as equipment in the truck, I would ask your company do they have or allow inverters. And as far as your gear, as long as you have an assigned truck your gear will be with you in your truck especially if you re going OTR. Keep in mind if your truck breaks down or they re about to get rid of your truck, it can be a PITA moving excess gear to a different truck.
4. As far as parking, as long as its in a secure location and you have written permission from property owner, you re more than welcome to take it home with you providing you live 50 plus miles away from any terminal or drop yard
I hope that I ve answered some of your questions -
I forgot to add the company pays tolls as long as you have permission to run toll roads. And your company will give you the number to the breakdown department in case of breakdown while on the road

Register you car in Texas and get a lease agreement that you live with your sister and you'll be ok.
Keep shopping around for team companies. Some pay pretty good. Old Dominion is one of the best for new cdl graduates. Teams there can make $225K.
Get all the endorsements including hazmat endorsement.
Here's a few to consider and the day cdl school starts, submit lots of applications, then take the best offer. You probably won't hear about these companies in cdl school job placement.
Old Dominion Freight Lines
TWT Refrigerated Service - team pay $.60 cpm split
Celadon - team pay $.60 cpm split
Trimac Transportation - hazmat tankers running coast to coast.
SVTN - hazmat tanker teams.
Freymiller - coast to coast refrigerated trucking. Fancy trucks set up for driver comfort. You'll start with "Restore Program" which is described on the website. This program is for new cdl grads.
Danny Herman Trucking - coast to coast dry van, fancy trucks, usually stay below I-40 (no Northeast)
Abilene Motor Express - coast to coast dry van & refrigerated trucking. Trucks run 71 mph.
Titan Transfer - coast to coast dry van trucking. Trucks run 70 mph.
FFE (Frozen Food Express) - refrigerated truckingBig Dog 585 Thanks this. -
Check Freymiller's radio station on the website.
Look at the websites of all the companies listed and start a list of the ones you like, then you'll be ready to submit applications on "day one" of cdl school. -
If you have been a chef, and consider yourself a "foodie", you are going to get sick of truckstop food pretty quickly. Make sure to find a company that will allow an inverter. Then you can at least throw a crockpot in the truck. Or bring good food from home that stores well, to warm up in a microwave. I work for a company that provides a fridge, inverter, and APU in every truck. I make a lot of meals in here. Helps both the palate, and the waistline.
