I am looking at trying my hand in the OTR profession. I have talked to a few schools and doing research bout which companies to NOT work for. Anyway, I am wanting to drive a flatbed but I am thinking with me being a newbie I should probably start with a van. Any suggestions? Also what are the biggest differences, if any in pulling the flatbed vs. the van?
howdy..

it's much different with a van, why waste your time hauling freight and slamming doors when you could be learning to flatbed from the get go.

You will drive a truck...you will pull a flatbed. Now that we have semantics out of the way. There is no reason not to start on flats if you are confident that is the part of the industry you want to work in. I believe both TMC and Maverick are still accepting students. Both of these would be good companies to start with. I am not sure if any of the Southern flatbedders like BTC accept students.

Flatbed is a good place to start in the industry. If you can handle the tarp and chains, and I've seen a lot who don't look it but do it well anyway, then the rest is the same. Look around and see who is running in your area and start calling them, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Go to a local truck stop and see who's there, most drivers won't B.S. you about the company.
