I did N14 swap from ISX.....Rebuilt the N14 ground up.
I got it running in the truck and runs beautiful. However i have a very faint whine humming from driver side when it's idling and under a load. The whine never changes pitch with the engine. It only goes away under deaccleration. You can't bearly hear it in the cab unless win is down. You can barely hear it over the engine.
Did put a new oil pump and gear on it.
It doesnt change hot or cold. Air compressor pump is disenaged(does change whether pumping or not).
going to recheck cam end play. I did mess with the shims on ressassemblely but it felt good.
It always go completely away under deacceleration. Any thought?
I should add it barely there, sounds like a very low end supercharger, powersteering moan, low dinger you can't locate. Engine almost completely muffles it.

I would guess gear whine from the cam gear or related. Try loosening the p/s pump too to see if it is binding.

Drove it for 30 miles trip. It seems to be fading out. I believe it's a minor renosates front gear train noise. I put new cam bearings and of course new main bearings. The teeth are probably slight different lash from where they were worn into. I think that was making very slight low resonate hum. It's going away fast.
Smooth running engine. Louder deep engine exhaust thoarty noise and louder jakes(or mufflers are losing there silence). Rods were almost 1/3 longer. I think perhaps it's has a longer stroke making it a deeper sounding engine.
Boss is going to put me in the truck for the week next week for 3 runs and let me work the truck throw any kinks.
Good advice. Thanks you very much. If it's back in the morning i will check cam play
(cam gear to crankshaft was .007 perfect but harder to make the oil and idler backlash) and lossen the power steering pump. The noise did change with pump a little when steering it, but it's also putting different loads on the front gear train.
See what we got tomorrow. Thankyou.Heavyd Thanks this. -
I located the noise. While it's running it i just barely touch the rear bell house on the engine where there is a 8 inch or so gap between the engine and housing horizonatally. It goes away. The bell housing is picking up a slight resnoates in the engine or making the rear bell housing ding. It where it has no bolts and open on the bottom. I don't like the concept because it's point for contamination.

If you just thump the bell housing bottom with your finger you can make it ring. -
Many times these noises have always been there, but muffled due to a grease and dirt coated bell housing. Once you rebuild it and clean it out, the sound buffer has been washed away and it is easy to get those noises again.

IT was barely a noise a mechanic could hear.Last edited: May 5, 2017
