This is in relationship to servers. Not modems or routers. These connect to the external server.

You might try the FBI website and note that the "fix" for this Malware that some servers were affected with is being turned off in July.

Correct, I missed that point. If you are using a router, that could be affected as well.

The corrupt servers were confiscated by the feds and replaced with "clean" servers some time ago. They are being taken down in June but they are trying to let people know of the problem, ahead of time. It has to do with Domain Name System (DNS) Internet system to translate names into IP addresses. Now is the time to check and see if you have been infected.

You should be concerned with your DNS server at all times,
Personally I use google 8.8.8.8 and open DNS at 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220Your DNS can be poisoned before or after July and if your DNS has been poisoned you may have gotten your last windows or anti virus updates from hackers-R-US local 666.
    Then all bets are off.
I can set up a DNS server in very short order (and it's commonly done on business networks)
And there is a hosts file your computer goes to before the DNS (depending on OS and configuration)

Most people will be connect to an router from their internet provider. Any computer or device behind that router will be on a 192.168.xxx.xxx network.

If in doubt read the information and follow the instructions. If you are not sure call your internet provider and they can remote into your router to check it.

It has nothing to do with your computer. It is a router issue in the assigning of an IP to the internet. your computer is set to auto find an IP from the router and it will be an 192.168.xxx.xxx IP which is a local IP.

I always enjoy doing a fresh install every once in a while. Of course with my computers being Linux (Ubuntu 12.04) and Max OS X (10.4), I seldom have to worry about viruses. I actually tried to run a virus (.exe file) once on my Linux box just to see what it would do. It said it was installed and gave me a message of "I'm sorry, but your computer is now useless". Then I closed the window and went on, since .exe files cant install on Linux.

    1. The local address has little to do with this problem
it is malware that changes the dns address your computer (and/or possibly your router) uses as a DNS server
if you change the address to a real DNS server (like the ones I posted earlier) it will probably just change it back to the poison one.
This is roughly equal to changing the speed dial on your cell phone to my number instead of 411 and when you ( the computer) calls to get the number to call, say your bank, I answer pretending to be directory assistance). I can give you any number I want and you (your computer) will use the wrong number I gave to go to a site I run that looks alot like the one you expect. But really it's all me!! So now what is your user name and password.

Worse than that when you computer calls and asks for the IP address to your anti-virus update site again you go to my site and down load new definitions that ignore the trojan included in the "update"

So if I found this malware had infected my computer I'd format and reinstall the OS> I would never trust that computer until I had. Once your OS is compromised it is suspect.

You can use the addresses for open dns or google's DNS servers regardless of what private IP address I happen to set up my router to use. And my internet provider cant "remote into" any of my routers. And they all run linux.

In short my advise is if you get or have this software infection don't play around format and reinstall or you could never trust the machine again or format and reinstall.
