I have 5 years experience and live in Sioux Falls, S.D. I have been off the road for the last year to finish college, and I was wondering if anybody would recommend anyone of these companies for flatbed. No experience in flatbed, but I am tired of pulling a box around. Hometime is really not an issue, just need to be home once in a while to mow the yard or shovel the snow.

I haven't pulled a skateboard for anyone but of the companies you listed I would say Decker. I don't know much about them but they're equipment that I saw always looked in decent shape. I wouldn't go to Western Express willingly though, I knew a driver that went there and he was amazed at how much worse than Werner it was, and that's saying alot.

I drove for Hunt years ago. I can't speak for them now, but I thought they were a good company when I was with them. I didn't have a home, per se, that I needed to go home to since I just kept my stuff in storage and lived on the road, so I can't really give an accurate rating of hometime. Once, I got on a roll and went 13 weeks without taking some time off, but usually it was more like 4 - 8 weeks. But I was in the company's top ten for miles driven for months on end and I grossed a thousand a week regularly if that tells you anything about earnings potential. Freight hauling isn't my cup 'o tea now, though, so all I know about it is in the past. Good luck!

Hunt is a part of crete..... I thought they were all O/O though.

    Western Express..... RUN FORREST, RUN!

Keim.... Never driven for them, but the drivers I speak to seem happy. I never seen one sitting long.

Decker..... I hope you like Sheetrock. Being based out of Ft. Dodge, they haul a lot of sheetrock

jpt--these are all my competitors, but since you are out of my hiring area I will give you my lowdown on each. I don't know any of their compensation packages so we will assume pay is equal. Hunt is one of the cheap John Deere carriers. Because of this they get plenty of freight. I am not sure what they do outside the Midwest. Their equipment is not very impressive. I don't know much about Western Express. When they were SMX, they tended to pay less and and have worse equipment than other open deck carriers. Nothing since has shown me any different. Keim...I don't have much on them. They are a new entry. From what I know their rates are low...which is pretty typical on the wallboard hauler to flatbed carrier spectrum. Their equipment usually looks good. Decker is the prince among your choices. Top notch equipment and facilities. They are a great company. You will do well ther. Also, I believe they tarp most of their loads for the driver.

I used to do a lot of sheetrock loads back when they shipped it from Winnipeg MB down to the states, and let me tell you, these are some of the best and easiest tarped loads to have. Only thing I found easier were lumber, or low steel loads. I miss the days of taking a load of sheetrock from Winnipeg to Las Vegas.
