What was fun was calling dispatch on those NYC payphones with the 5 min limit.

Just a note: I started going to Hunts Point just this year, and it was with the help of this thread. And I just walked somebody into the market the other night over the phone, PAINSTAKINGLY giving him directions FOOT BY FOOT. I guarantee it was one of the very best first-time visits to the market! Thanks to this thread.

I created a three-page PDF of directions to Hunts Point Market. Supported by this thread's older messages! Doesn't everybody wish they had a dispatcher who bothered to do this stuff? Anyway, these directions work for me and all of my guys.

That was really cool of you to do--but the opening line about professional drivers losing their minds going there is a bit much! LMAO

Nice. I always go in via Tiffany, left on Randall, right on Edgewater/Halleck, left into Food Center Dr. but I'm going to the meat side. $25 gate fee, unless you have one of their cards (one of our other drivers does, no idea how or where he got it though).

Also if you're leaving the market to go out to Long Island or CT, follow Edgewater to the Bruckner Expressway, get on the service road for a few lights, then merge onto 278. From there you can get to the Throgs Neck or Whitestone bridges, or back up to 95 on the other side of the Bronx.

I ran hunts point from 1979 to 1996, You couldn't even stop if you did you would get robbed right on the spot, The cops would ticket you even if you stopped at a stop sign. It was not fenced in at the time lock your doors and hope you get out alive, Now its not bad at all now, I went there last week it like a different world compared to 70' 80's

fulton fish market was like that in the 70's too
they would be hanging onto your dot bumper if you slowed down too much
then you had to drive right into the market to get the mafia lumpers to get rid of them
it must be a kinder gentler world over at hunts point today
I still have a scar on my shoulder from carrying around a typical box hook from those fish truckin days
