I got out of Philly around 5pm last night and glad to be out of there. I've never seen so many cars on the road packed with clothes and Ramen noodles.

DirtyBob... Glad you got in and out safely!

Getting my info off the Weather Channel on tv.....

The Gov of Maryland was interviewed just now and he said that in Ocean City 300 people refused to leave and they got next of kin reports from them. So stupid.. sigh. The winds may not be as bad as expected but the rain, tidal surges and so forth are going to cause lots of flooding.

They are listing 4 deaths due to the hurricane as of 2pm today. Sorry but I dont have any other details on that. But I understand one of them was a young boy who died when a tree fell on a 2 story apt building.

7,000 patients in hospitals in the evacuated sections of NYC have been moved to safer locations.

Nah, most dangerous spot in NYC is the Rockaways. Google "Coney Island". NYC actually has about 5-7 miles of beach front property with an average altitude of about 12 feet above sea level.

And just like every other part of the city, it's got a subway and projects. (dude,,, waterfront Section 8? What a country)

It's also about 3 miles from the "mainland" of Long Island. Over narrow causways. So if it hits the fan out there, yer stuck.

Right now I'm waiting to see if Ireene dips West over the Chessapeke, or East over the Atlantic. That's really the only thing that I think is going to affect me. We're far enough from Philly that we've got shelter from the first set of mountain ranges.

Also my company has a 1st responder contract with the county, so if we have to help evacuate government buildings (file cabnets, computers and such) I'll get a call over night.

So I can't ride this storm out with scotch,, I'll have to settle for Fudge Ripple. :D

watching the news today while waiting on a load.
You would think nothing else has happened in the world than Irene is coming to NY!
    Everyone in a panic!
    Armagedon is nearly here!
Good grief! it's barely a cat 1 storm!
First everyone gets up in arms over a measley 5.8 shaker, now they're running for the hills over a cat 1 storm. (probably will be a tropical storm by the time it gets to the rotten apple).
So what will those people do if a big storm ever hit?
    Methinks they are whimps!

Seven have already died. Most from tree's falling on cars. Who drives in a hurricane?
One tree fell on a kid at his apartment.
One man died with a heart attack plywooding his windows.
A surfer died in FL evidently he went over the wave and broke his neck on the ground or something.
Then one or more died in a car wreck that drove through a redlight that had no power and got Tboned. Don't they know to stop?

So far most of the deaths could of been avoided.

We didn't get a dam thing here. Not even the wind and rain I was hoping for. Just as stagnate as it was yesterday.

It's been raining here in Boston for most of the afternoon/evening; downpouring at times. I went outside to take in some loose objects and oddly, there was almost no wind at this point; although it's not suppose to make landfall here until 8am.

I'm sure it will just be a tropical storm by the time it gets here....

I hope anybody that may in any way be impacted by this hurricane stays safe and out of harms way.

There are some tornadoes being reported ahead of the storm and I've heard the Chesapeake Bay bridge is now closed due to the winds.

This is one of those storms that no matter what officials and weather folks say, it's going to be wrong. If they have people evacuate and it isn't as bad as expected, they will say it was overkill. If they hadn't had them evacuate and the storm is as bad as they predict, they will say there wasn't enough done to keep people safe. It's a no-win situation. Myself, I'd rather err on the side of caution.

I'm personally sitting in Hagerstown, MD with a 10k lb load that is supposed to deliver to Connecticut on Monday morning. Fun fun! As if that is gonna happen. I know I sure in the hell am not going any closer until I know the winds are died down, hell it was annoying enough getting the 30 mph winds going up I-81 today.
