Hoping to get some opinions and info. My husband went and got his CDL-A at a school called Nu-Way trucking in our area (Detroit, MI). From there he saw many presentations from many companies, and decided on Steven's Transport. Due to their training.

So he left for TX and during orientation there he was told if he stayed all 8 weeks (he had to spend 35 days on the road with a trainer, then could've gone home before spending 21 with a student) he would be given a week at home and be able to take his truck with him. We were also given the impression that once done with traning he would be home every couple weeks if he wanted, and that I would be allowed to go with him.

NOW he is done with his training, and still in TX. They now say I can't go with him for 90 MORE days (providing he is accident free) and that really, they will TRY to get him home every 3-6 weeks but no promises. They can't even tell him he is going straight home when he gets his truck, he could be out for even a couple more weeks. Needless to say this is very upsetting.

Basically the only thing keeping him there is he doesn't want to switch companies so fast. He is also really liking the Alliance opportunity, where he is kind-of an owner operator? Sorry if that's not what it's called I think that's what he refers to it as.

So I have a few questions. Have any of you been to Steven's and done this Alliance program? I am worried they made it sound great but they also made the company sound better than it has been. Is there ANYONE out there with a good Steven's experience because I can't seem to find a post. :biggrin_25510: We kindof went into this blindly, he always wanted to be a trucker but we dont' really KNOW anything about it, much less about Steven's. All we've been told is they reimburse his schooling, he'll get lots of miles, they have really good insurance, and their Alliance program is really good.

Is it even a good idea to be switching companies barely out of training for the first time? If it's possible that he can do this without it looking bad on him, what companies would you recommend? I know, there is no one all around great company, I'd say our MAIN concerns are me being with him (now or sooner than 3 months if now is impossible), and him getting miles. And if they don't reimburse tuition then paying a little more cpm would help.

Also, ANY REAL trucker advice and info would be greatly appreciated. I am tired of the point of view of people just trying to get you to work for them.

ETA: Been seeing this around, what is a DAC? :biggrin_25511:

It's what they call the lease program they have. O/O leasing is the way the husband puts it lol. Basically when he starts it he will be in the "grad fleet". He will drive the truck he's about to get for two months, then get a better truck, then a month after that go to making 85cpm (and paying for gas unless you can get 8mpg then they'll pay). Supposedly the "alliance drivers" get more miles and treated better in general. He leases the truck but he is not responsible for fixing it if something big goes wrong (but he is responsible for things like brakes and tires etc) so it's better than owning his own. This is all just what we've been told about it.

ETA: Sorry if it's not the greatest explanation so far like I said we went very blindly into all this, and trying to understand it from bits and pieces from all the people talking to him.

    Baack Thanks this.

I'm not trying to be mean or hateful but why in the name of all that is sacred and holy does the thinking process get shortcircuited and the switch put on off on the thinking machine when it comes to trucks? People go into these things without investigation, the same people that would have accountants and attornies checking things out if offered the same deal on a 7-11 or Burger King. The time to ask advice is before you get into these things, not after.

Any time you lease a truck from a trucking company there is an immediate conflict of interest. Trucking companies should haul freight, truck dealerships should sell trucks. You think things were bad when he was a company driver? They are going to get 100 times worse.

I feel for you, I really do. If I sound like I'm going overboard it's because I hate to see good, decent, hard working people like you and your husband who are only trying to better themselves being taken advantage of.

I wish you all the best. Stick around and ask questions.

I wish I could give you advice on a good company but I'm so cranky no one will work for me and so lazy no one will hire me so I've been stuck with me for 52 years.

A DAC is a record, rarely accurate, of a drivers work history. Do a search on here for more info.

Again I wish you and your husband all the best.

.85 cpm is Nothing! Do you realize at 4.25 a gallon and 6 mpg, it is .70 cpm just in fuel. He will loose money big time at .85 cpm. Now if it were 1.85 cpm then it would be better.

Lol it's ok I take no offense, I admit we didn't look into it as much as we should have before actually doing it... He's always wanted to be a trucker, so when we found a school he just kinda jumped lol. He also jumped into a company because he only had three weeks of schooling before being able to get a job, and we had no savings to fall back on so time wasn't really a luxury. There were companies that promised me coming within weeks, many companies paid more, but I am a HORRIBLE worrier so and he was worried about mountain driving (not anymore turns out lol) and Steven's had nothing but good things being said about their training. So another jump lol. He is not leasing atm, he just finished training and is about to get into his first truck driving alone. He will have an opportunity very soon to be in this lease program which is why any opinions are appreciated. Thanks for the responses, they are all appreciated. :biggrin_25519:

I admit I just did those numbers in my head and he would be making just about what he is now it seems like...except have a truck payment to make too... I have been focusing so much on wanting to see him that I have been not paying much attention to other info lol. Thanks for pointing it out because he usually looks to me for that kind of stuff lol.

I have a feeling I'm going to be asking a lot of "no brainer" questions in these forums thank you all for patience.

If I told you that you could come to Chicago for the following "oppurtunity," would you do it?

    1) I'll "lease you" a van for $200, that you will HAVE TO pay me regardless of whether or not you are working in a given week.

    2) You'll have to haul the freight I'll give you. I will pay you $.60 cents per mile.

    3) You will have to pay for fuel, maintiance, tires, and brakes on "your" van.

    4) After 2 years you'll have to gave me back the van and I'll lease you a new model this time for $300 a week.

Do you think this would be a good "deal" for you?

Tell your husband to get some experience as a company driver and not run but SPRINT as fast as his legs could possibly carry him away from Stevens and their "Alliance program."
