    hello

my husband has been an o/o for several years (long enough to pay off the truck)prior to that he was a co.driver for several years. we are at a point where i need to either go to work FT (which would require me to go back to school if i stay with the co. I'm currently with) or we have been discussing getting my cdl and going on the rd with him.

I'm posting on the o/o board since he is an o/o...

    1. suggestions on the better companies for o/o husband wife teams?

    2. is there a co.we could go with that would allow him to train me? (he's currently with comtrack that does not take newbie drivers)

    3. he got his license so long ago that I'm sure the 'best' school/co. to get it with hhas changed. any suggestions on how to get the 'best' schooling &/or save money getting it?

    4. he was looking at landstar as a possible go to for us... we are both detail oriented and do not mind having to think for ourselves... is this a co. anyone would recommend for a husband/wife team?

yes i have ridden on the truck with him several times and so far the only thing i would change is how messy it can get (he definitely doesn't complain about me cleaning it)

thank you all ahead of time for your responses and i have enjoyed reading the posts on the other feeds they are VERY helpful!

Ouch might not like hearing this but if you want to drive with him exp is a must for him to get on with a decent paying company. His exp doesn't make up for yours in that aspect so where can you go? Crest Werner ya know the crap fleets with crap wages. That's how most companies are going to view this you may be able to find a company that will let himttrain and if you can and they pay well take it. Other option is your own authority. Depending on driving records etc etc that may be an option to help with insurance and getting you exp. and there are companies that will dispatch people under their own authority for a percentage of the load. Problem is team freight that's a whole new ball game there. Talk about a cluster finding team freight. And customers are picky at times can't be there too early can't be too late. One of them grrrr times. Insurance is going to be your big hurdle leasing on and with new authority and no exp that raises rates as well plus you are your own company you maintain EVERYTHING and YOU go through your own safety audits. Its not easy and off the top of my head I can't really think of any decent companies you could go to that will pay you wellstarting out. Its one of them things. Check into land star it never hurts Google is your friend in this situation as well. Make the calls and start asking around. Sometimes companies well bend rules other times they won't.

    Good luck to you both.

Try Central Refrigeration, I started and trained with them. My trainer was a Husband and wife couple,
He trained for 14 days while she stayed at home, then she train for 14 days while he stayed home... maybe after you get your cdl with them (which should only take 3-4 weeks), he can be your trainer, then you and him can run teams.

Might have to stick it out with them for 1 yr, but hey! it'll go by in no time! I went to they're training school in conley, ga... just call them up...

    Look at Greatwide and Cardinal.

As posted above, Central Refrigerated is good for husband/wife team training.

To my thinking, your biggest problem might be the fact that the 2 of you would be together 24/7/365.My wife and I would not be able to stand that much together time. What about benefits like insurance ? If your job provides them, hard to replace as an O/O.And if you have a job, at least that is an income every week if something happenes to truck, he gets sick, freight slows, etc.

Conway truckload will let him train you as co driver as long as you have attended a cdl school and you have a valid class a cdl. I am a company driver for them and I have no complaints.

Landstar doesn't have a lot of work for teams.

I would not attend school at a company because then you have a one year contract and that would be signing a deal with the devil for you, your husband, and your business that could but you out of business.

If your husband is an O/O then I'm sure he is incorporated and in that case he can pay for your CDL schooling and get 100% of it as a tax right off. If he doesn't have the cash then you can take out a student loan to go to CDL school and he can make it look like the business is paying off the loan as you go and still get it as a 100% tax right off.

My best friend and his wife drive O/O team for USX since 1998 and have been running the wheels off the trucks.

My wife and I drove O/O Team for Oakley Transport out of Lake Wales, FL. and they were very flexible with us. When we wanted to run hard we ran as hard as legal possible. When to went to solo were allowed to and when we wanted to vacation somewhere they always got us there. We did all 48 states and most parts of Canada most U.S. drivers will never see. They had a no chain policy and in the winter would route us 1000 miles out of the way to avoid storm and pay us for the out of route miles. The always paid us correctly and on time.

My brother was on with Landstar when his wife came on with him and he had to leave because they just didn't have team driving work. He ran into the same problem at Prime, Southern Refrigerated, and Central Refrigerated. Finally he ended up at SNI and has been doing great there. Who would have thought, because he use to be the biggest Mega-Carrier hater in the world. They basically runs from Southern Florida to California and back.

While you are at home, start knocking on doors, pick up the phone and call around your area looking for co.'s with loads going where you would like to run. These people don't know the difference between you and a sales person from a mega fleet, so you tell them you can give them the personal attention that the mega fleet cannot.
