My wife and I are driving team and are really wondering what hours we should run together?? We still love each other and as much as possible would like to sleep together for at least 3-4 hours. We know that can't always be the case but prefer that. We have been trying to run 10 hour shifts as that's what the elog likes... Lol. But.. We have heard that 6 hour shifts are best... Does that work with elog... ??? Help!!

I have also wondered about this. Check H/W teams in the " Search " box. There is a lot of good info there about a lot of different things.

the safe answer is log it like you do it, right ? I mean, that's the point of logging anyways.

another point is that your company hires a team to keep the truck moving, if one guy can run a truck 14 out of 24 hours a team should be able to run 24/7.

So if you want to do some kind of conjugal jive 4 hours a day you're gonna have to be clever about it.

I don't know what to tell you other than try to split it 12/12 and when you make deliveries and pickups find a place to rock the truck awhile.

Set the cruise control and go at it; doesn't that work like auto-pilot?

If you are team driving you need to keep the wheels turning to meet deadlines and be successful. I've found it best for each driver to keep a schedule, like one drives noon to midnight and the other drives from midnight to noon. This will help keep each of you on a predictable sleep schedule. When you are actively driving then your relationship will be reduced to conversation while the off duty partner is awake and in the passenger seat.

There will be times the wheels aren't turning. Could be the 30 minute breaks, but often you will have times when the truck is parked for extended times: waiting for a dispatch, arriving early to destination for an appointment, taking a 34, or scheduling a longer break to take "home time". I put home time in parenthesis because some companies allow you to take home time anywhere you want, which would give you opportunities to visit friends or family or to take in some sights.

I met a couple that was teaming and taking 3 days "home time" in a rental car at the Grand Canyon and surrounding area. They lived out of the truck, didn't pay rent, and therefore would budget time and money to do special home times on the road.

If you are "truck savvy" you can run the truck 20 hrs a day and "park it" for 4 hrs to get some solid sleep. This won't happen every day, but it's doable a lot of the time. You must manage your time well. As an example, your delivery has a 6AM appointment, you are there or almost there at 130AM with-in 10 miles, so park at a quiet spot and sleep solid for 4 hrs, then hit your appointment at the required time, instead of going to the consignee at 130 and dealing with who-knows-what going on while waiting to get in a door. The consignee might take you early, or, jack you around in their holding pen with noise and knocks on the door etc.

You will figure it out as time goes on. My hubby and I run team, and have been for almost three months now. There are times when that truck stops for fuel, food and bathrooms and that is it, and there are other times where we end up with the whole night off together or the whole day off together. Since we haul bulk spuds and there is always the chance of a rejected load or plant breakdown, we don't book the next load until we are empty, or at least on the lift getting empty. It really is going to depend on when the load is due to deliver. There are many times where I pull about 8 hours and then he does the same, and then we get to stop moving and sleep at the same time for a bit.

Before you can get a correct answer, you will have to give out more information. Why are you running as a team? Do you own your own truck or are you leased to a company? Where are you running to?

For some it makes sense to run 23 hours a day and then take your 34 hour reset. If you are dropping and hooking all the time that is great. But if you have live loads and unloads then you and your wife might be better off running 7 days a week, forever, without resets. One drives 8 hours, the other drives 8 hours and you sleep for 8 hours. Together. Actually, the 8 hours non driving is used as off duty time. The truck is getting loaded and unloaded or you are waiting. As long as you never exceed the 830 or so magic time, you never have to do a reset.

Remember the purpose of HOS regs are to make your life better, not to mess you up. If a company could run you 24hours a day they would. The truck only makes money moving. As drivers, time spent loading and unloading, costs us the most. We are not paid for it but have to be there anyway. Go off duty and save your hours.

You are driving to earn a living, don't stop living to drive.

My wife drives from 7am to 7pm. I do the night shift. The best way we've found to get time to "sleep" together is doing reefer. Sometimes getting loaded/unloaded can take several hours.
