So I've been hauling for a company in the northeast and I got a load going to Massachusetts, which I have done a few times so far, because the driver said he didnt have a HUT sticker to travel through NY. I took the load because I have the IFTA sticker and rolled on through NY and back. So, what exactly is the HUT sticker and why do I see so many trucks up here with it? Is it for drivers who dont leave the state of NY that have to register for HUT because IFTA doesnt apply for staying within a state? I'm confused by this and I know ignorance doesnt stop myself from being fined.

For the record, I pay IFTA and here within a couple of months have I been in the northeast territory.

    Thanks for the info!

Two separate things. HUT, Highway Use Tax is a mileage/weight tax paid to the state of New York. You drive in the state, you need one.

    Highway use tax

Yeah, it's a way for NY to tax truck drivers that may drive through the state once a year so as to upkeep the great roads there.

Went through upstate NY Friday and got pulled into rest areas three times for spot checks, every time was asked for a current HUT sticker which I don't have, but do have the temporary letter of authorization. If the weather is nice NY DOT will definitely be in the rest areas.

Company that I am leased on to pays for HUT and tolls . If they didn't , would never go to N.Y.

New York, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Oregon all have additional tax filing required if you run those states. You have to register with them or buy a permit before entering the state.

Any truck or combo over 18,000lbs. You got lucky they didn't nab you. Go online & register if you plan on going back. It's cheap for a hotshot. Mine was 1.6 cents per mile for 36k lbs..

You don't have to worry about Kentucky. The kyu # & filing they require starts at 60k lbs.

These states are double-dipping, they could just simply increase the IFTA portion for their states but no must make it difficult must make truckers jump thru hoops. People living in these states need to talk to their representative now.
