If I know my exit is coming up, I slow down to 55 mph about 1/2 mile before the exit. I'll be in 9th gear. Then you can get 8th gear and use the brakes and the engine brake to slow you down to 25 mph. Then you can get 7th or 6th gear. You can drop down to each gear or skip them, whichever is more comfortable for you. But usually if you're in 10th gear, it will start to lug at 35 mph, so you'll need to grab 8th or a high rev 7th.

Plus that 25mph yellow sign is the speed for cars. Heavy trucks should be under that.

give a fair warning with your turn signal and watch what's behind you, I'm one of those that do both brakes and shift to which ever gear it'll slip in to.

I had trainees take on and off ramps to practice on shifting. if they missed a gear we'd go over it and what to do. maybe your trainer wants to check on possible improvements and or see where your at.

If I'm outside a Jake-prohibited zone, Jakes come on and I downshift through each gear (including splits). If it's Jake-prohibited, I use the service brakes instead and roll the same way down (usually skipping splits and just going for main gears).

I prefer gradual deceleration with controlled downshifting to driving like a four-wheeler. It improves fuel economy, cuts down on brake wear (or fade on grades) and is just, to me, far more professional.

Brakes are way cheaper than everything else, this professional prefers to save money rather than needlessly wear everything else out.
