The power of nature. It's really hard to imagine the scale of this but I'm guessing those channels it carved are probably 30-50 feet deep.

This happened out on US-40 in PA recently as well. That’s been blocked for a good while now.Cattleman84 Thanks this.

According to codot website they are supposed to have one lane each direction by Saturday the 14th afternoon.
I-70 Glenwood Canyon Safety Closure Update: Friday, Aug. 13201 and Linte_Loco Thank this. -
Thanks, I saw that after my post. One lane is going to be a mega bottleneck, our news stations are as lame as it gets. It's as if nobody proof reads the news. Our channel 7, said, "Glenwood Canyon will be closed until Thanksgiving, and even then only one lane,",,THE NEXT DAY, they said, "Good news, I-70 will be open one lane each way today", then they mistakenly claimed, CDOT is going to spend millions on Cottonwood Pass to make it safer, when they meant Independence Pass. They already improved Cottonwood.
SO, that's the news for ya',,,

Cottonwood Pass, which is near Buena Vista, has been paved, and has nothing to do with the current situation.
However, there is a lesser known Cottonwood Pass between Gypsum and Carbondale, which is the one they were likely referring to on the news. That's the one the Eastern Bloc types kept getting on last year during the fire. It was actually one of the routes considered for I-70 before construction. Prolonged Glenwood Canyon closure tests the limits of Cottonwood Pass
And there have been stretches of single lane construction in Glenwood Canyon almost continuously for the last few years. I wouldn't class them as "mega bottlenecks." The rubbernecking is what's going to cause the issues.
