Yeah you can't miss it, lots of signs well before you descend.
It's just after the Dead Man pass rest area a few miles East of Pendleton.

MP 230 is in the thick of it. You can watch videos of it on Youtube.

I did it at night in heavy snow once. Even got the tee shirt. One of the longest downhill drives I've ever had. Top speed was about 5mph. Cabbage may be underrated to some, but it is a formidable obstacle when it wants to be.
gpsman Thanks this. -

Figure about the 216 to 225. It's a beautiful drive/sight [some days/mornings] to witness from the top, west bound in the morning so long as the fog doesn't get too thick -
I took a 10 hour break at the truck stop at the bottom of the hill last summer. I parked about an hour before sundown, had dinner in the truck with a view of the hill, lit up by the setting sun. All of a sudden the truck got rocked so hard I thought someone had hit me, but it was the first blast of a windstorm. I looked out to see a wall of dust approaching from the south. Within minutes the freeway wasn't visible. I finished dinner, got my rain jacket on and pulled the hood tight to go into use the rest room. Truckers were in there talking about the wind and poor visibility coming down Cabbage, sounded like a nice day for a controlled descent turned into white knuckle driving in a hurry.
Whether it is fog, sand storm, wind, or snow, that hill can bring it. Be prepared.Cabinover101, gpsman and 54Trucker Thank this. -
If you're doing 5mph you shouldn't be driving those mountains. I was driving 10mph down Eisenhower pass and decided to quit the run after causing a pickup truck to spin out several times onto the shoulder, luckily no one was hit and he pulled out of the snow and passed me within minutes.
When you're coming down a big hill like Eisenhower or Cabbage patch you have to keep up with traffic or you'll cause an accident. I wasn't trained properly for mountain driving, and by mountain driving I mean snow at night. The proper speed down Eisenhower is 25mph, I was told 10mph was OK but in reality its not because at that speed it can cause either cars or trucks to rear end you.
I never driven Cabbage patch, only Eisenhower which is 11,000ft when you exit the tunnel. It is around 10 miles to the bottom, the grade is something like 6% and it curves several times. I drove over the pass several times in the snow without an accident outside of that pick-up that woke me up to the reality that it could have been a semi.TokyoJoe Thanks this. -
That part of the state can be unpredictable, they do at times shut the freeway down completely and did so just days ago due to fog and ice.
Eisenhower is a lot longer for sure, there are always slow trucks going down Cabbage but it's two lanes going down and separated from the uphill part so passing isn't really hard if you can see, fog is the worst situation whether it's snow or dry pavement so one has to watch for really slow trucks in the right lane.
I've always been more nervous going down the West side of highway 26 (Mt Hood Nat. Forest) headed towards Portland than I ever was on Cabbage. -
Spent many a night on top at Dead Man Pass, lovely drive down in the morning when the sun is out, lots of deer in the meadows and you can see for miles.gpsman Thanks this.
