86 is pretty, and 80 is pretty, And 81, and while going to New York from the west, 80 to 322 to 81 to 78 is pretty.
86 in western New York is under construction detouring both sides off onto 417 near Salamanca, they should be getting that finished soon, but I'm not holding my breath waiting. There is a stretch of rough pavement with a posted limit of 55 just east of the construction You can miss much of the thruway with other roads in the same corridor, according to the MCA, but the Interstate or the toll would probably pencil out better. -
The Salamanca detour is not very big, though it does go through Ellicottville and a few other small towns with low speed limits. If I were going from Erie to Schenectady 86 to 88 would win hands down. Fuel consumption will not differ significantly, as 86 is pretty flat to rolling. The detour through Binghamton is done (they were routing 81 NB onto US-11 for a minute) so you'll breeze right through that construction also, unless travelling in peak hours.
You pays your money and you takes your choice. As a longtime NY resident, I'll keep my money and my vehicles off the Thruway unless absolutely necessary, though. We already pay enough (ton mile tax anyone?). -
Did NY finally do away with the extra charge for a 53' trailer? It's been 13 years since I've been up there but the company I worked for had mostly 48's. The 53' trailers always cost more. I could never figure this out except to say it's government, what do you expect.

The over 7'6" thing only means you're not a car. Pay it no mind.Ruthless Thanks this. -
Just so you know you can google the toll road for any state to find the cost. I use it all the time.

Just went to rochester in my car the back way 28 to 30 to 86, saved $25.22 in BS tolls, I see more class 8 trucks on 86 than 90
