It's not a matter of what the weather looks like. Either you're carrying or you're in violation. BTW... this time of year, they just get more expensive.

Excellant thread and info! Sitting at the Love's close to the Idaho/washington border. Be prepared for quick weather changes. We may have been the last westbound truck allowed up without chains on the last mtn. pass. The eastbound traffice going up the mtn. Was a cluster. Jack knifed semis and oversized load going nowhere soon. Everybody else just stopped in the slow lane and starting putting chains on. Nice drive for the most part. Would have liked to have stopped at that Montana Car Museum.

I checked the regs, and trucks are not required to actually CARRY chains along that route - at least anywhere east of Spokane. But if the weather is such that chains are required, one would be parked until the chain requirement was lifted.

I did pick up chains for one axle at a Pilot along the route - $120 for a pair. Quite reasonable, I'd think. Never needed to take them out of the bag.

    how much do chains cost?

And what's the lost revenue for SITTING for two days for NOT having chains?

Perzactly. I got a lot of resistance from the back office regarding the proposed purchase, but in the end I just swiped the card and tossed the chains in the side box. Haven't heard a word about it since.

Fuel to idle the truck for 36 hours while waiting would have cost more than the chains that I bought.

I paid less than what the TA in Denver wanted for them, that's for sure.

Well, yeah! It's a racket... you want your chain's 'n bungies on the truck by the beginning of September to be legal in Colorado. After then they know they've gotcha by the shorthairs!!

Hey I just met you, and this is crazy, chains are required, Snowqualmie maybe?

..I made it up on my first trip over that.

I didn't know about all those fancy named mountain passes until I had already driven over them.
