Raleigh website WRAL is reporting that I-95 is closed in both directions at Exit 173 (near Roanoke Rapids, NC) and is expected to remain closed for several hours due to flash flooding following several hours of heavy rain (reported at 7.7 inches!) The 2:15 PM update to the story reported that the current northbound backup is 13 miles! Here is link to story for further information:

I tried getting on NC DOT travel page for more information, but either it or my browser (or both) is/are having problems and the session just crashes.

i am always in that area around exit 176, on a weekly basis. i can not ever remember i 95 flooding .

I live 40 miles from there and travel that road on a constant basis. There is a sign on the interstate that says to slow down during rain but that is due to the traffic congestion from the malls there. They must mean with that much rain the water is staying on the roadway and not draining off as fast as it needs too. I have had just mist here today but that is NC for ya. Pour buckets 10 miles away and blue skies where you stand.

If you don't want to sit there like that you can get off several miles before this exit and cross over rt903 to rt 158west. This will run you over to Norlina where you pick up Rte 1 north and it will run into I85 in 10 miles or so and shoot you straight north. If your way before that in Rocky Mt take Rte. 64 W to raleigh and then exit at RTE 39 North this is a good 2 lane and will run you right into RTE 1 in Hendereson. Take RTE 1 North a few miles and it merges into I85 North and your on your way to the merge into I95 in Petersburg, VA

A 3:06 PM update to the story on the above-referenced website stated that I-95 reopened around 3:00 PM
but I suspect with the backups cited in the earlier version of the story it will be quite a while before traffic
returns to anything resembling "normal."
