While backing into a dock last week the face plate was missing off of the trailer wrecker (dock protector) and from 70-90 feet away in my mirror it was not not registering in my brain evidently. I finally saw it and realized what it was with some room to spare.

This one I could see no problem because of the yellow face

You'll see plenty of these, they get destroyed all the time by drivers. Practice getting out before you get all the way in docks and checking that nothing is out of place inside the curtain. Saved me from damaging a dock yesterday at Lowes when somebody had left the pipe in the hole.

See, now that you have been used to flatbedding this whole time, you will be amazed at the silly problems door slammers have to face.

And I’m not saying door slammers aren’t faced with real problems, just that they are on a completely different level.

When you open your doors, scope the place out. It's a good opportunity to see what you're doing and what you need to do.

Great advice. In this particular instance, we were waiting for about an hour to be assigned a dock and open the doors while we were sitting in their bullpen. like recommended above I guess I’ll just have to get out when I am within 5 feet or so of the dock.

It was weird, I could see there was something there, but I wasn’t sure if it was just marks on the wall until I got back closer.

Yeah, see after all these years, I still do it. That way you can actually GOAL without looking / feeling like a rookie........"hey, I'm just opening my doors."
Watch for chocks too. Sometimes drivers drive over them and leave them in the lane. Also, take a look at how the lines are painted. Believe it or not, a lot of places go to the expense of painting lines that have no reasonable relationship to where you're actually back up. Look at the trailer next to you. Is he on the line? A foot off? 6 inches over? Whatever he's doing is probably what you'll be doing. There's lots of stuff you'll learn in the 3 minutes it takes you to open your doors. Take full advantage of it.

Ya'll seem to be doing just fine. Best wishes.

....Especially in my line of work.

I had one hell of a time trying to back into a car dealer today to unload an engine, and I wasn’t about to unload that 600 lb beast in the street.

    The problem?

Well, that was the one idiot who both parked too close to the corner, and apparently didn’t feel like getting closer to the curb than 3 feet.
