I am a new driver and I wanted to haul some loads from a broker , now my question is do you need a certain amount of years experience to haul loads from brokers or can new drivers haul as well ?

    Locke Thanks this.

I saw your other post that you do not have a truck yet and here you say you are a 'new driver' but you are looking to line up brokers?

I'm new to trucking as well, but something sounds a tad off with your sequencing and expectations. Do you have your own authority? Insurance?

If you want to do it completely solo right off the bat your insurance will likely be your limiting factor. You will pay more than your 15,000 truck is worth in your first few years. It can be done but it isn't easy. This industry will chew you up and spit you out if you let it. And not having the knowledge of what a truck costs to operate and what rates are good or not so good for a certain market will be your downfall. You have so much to learn you don't even know what you don't know. Gotta walk before you can run. But in your case you gotta crawl before you can walk. I'm not trying to put you down but I've seen it many times before people in your same situation, and they lose everything.

I agree. I see many drivers become qualified solo drivers and the first thing they want to do is own their own truck. This I s a very bad idea especially if you don't have a long time successful mentor to guide you. Yes, there is a lot to be learned and you sure don't want to learn them the hard way.

The insurance and authority is the easier part, My concern is finding direct shippers and brokers who will take on a new driver .

It doesn't sound like you have priced all the insurance you will be required to carry. Again, I am new to this but from the sounds of it your insurance for your first year may cost more than the budget you have for your truck.

Don't get ahead of yourself. Find a job working for someone else for a while. If you're new to this your attention needs to be on the truck and your surroundings for awhile. Give yourself some time to make mistakes. Preferably on someone elses insurance first. Get good at being a driver before you decide to also try to get good at being a businessman. If you try to do both at the same time you're likely to end up in the poorhouse.

And then maybe look for some health insurance in case you decide to do business with the knocking lizard.
