He's been trucking for ages. I told him I don't want to go to school anymore and that I want to get a CDL. He told me "Cool, I'll take you on the road and show you what it's like and teach you to drive"

So now, say we do this, and I learn how to drive/shift gears/back/etc without going to a CDL School, and study online all the material needed to pass the CDL exam.

I don't really know what the point of the post is I'm just kind of saying what I will be doing.

Do you think it will be harder for me to get hired if I do it this way vs going to school? I do not have money or time to spend.

One bad thing is, well two.. I'm 22 and have had 3 convictions (3 speeding) and 1 suspension (due to amount of tickets in 1 year span)

My last ticket was on 7-11-10

I would think I will get a CDL in a couple months, so lets say 7-11-12 just for #####.

What are the chances of me getting hired, for even a ###### company.. yeah I said it. At this point I think it would be good to just get some OTR time so I can move on to bigger and better things (Hazmat) in the future.

I'd be cool with earning 20,000$ a year to start, I really would.

Let me know what you guys think, and please be respectful. This is my career choice and don't bash on my past... I've made some mistakes and I think it is safe to say we all have. This is a new beginning.

    P.S.

    Holy #### trucks are huge!

Just because your new doesnt mean its okay to accept 20k a year and "be happy" with it, too many people are happy with piss poor wages that's why no one wants to pay out anything...

The way I see it is, I have a bad record, I am new, so anything is better than nothing.

I'm a new driver too. i been out here 6months and i still dont know if im "paying dues" and "working hard" or just being taken advantage of. at what point does it go from "working for it" to just being abused. 26cpm? 22cpm? 8cpm?

What im getting at here is my record was alot better, 1 ticket for crossing double yellow line(i got in the turn lane too early) and that was it. With that being said i still only make about 500-600 a week thanks to per diem. some weeks i wont break 500 and according to my quarterly bonus sheet i made 2 out of 3 bonuses available, 100% ontime delivery/service and averaged above 6.5mpg, the 3bonus i missed (2500 miles per week average) was not my fault, i never turned down a load and got there asap. i averaged 1733 miles per week under 30cpm

But everyone else seems to get those 1k a week starting jobs with a felony or 3 im just the exception

Could be the location bro. Have you tried moving to North Dakota? I heard there are plenty of jobs there starting rookies at astounding rates..

Just saying, it might be something something to consider if you're single with nothing holding you down.

First of all, how you want to obtain your CDL is exactly how I did. My father had a truck for his business, taught me to drive it, and about 2 weeks later had my CDL A in hand. Been driving every now and then for over 10 years now, perfect record and just as skilled as anyone going through a school.

However, I own my own business and do not rely on driving for a career. I'm guessing you may have a hard time finding a job. Does your dad have any connections considering he has been driving for a long time??? I bet he could help you out.

I have looked at the oil fields, and what i've gathered from asking around is, sure you will make 25-30 bux an hour. but do you know how much housing is out there? i said NP i will put a campshell on my pickup sleep in that... the guy let out a massive laugh and after he got the giggles out he asked " you think the dakotas winters are like souther californias?" he said with windchill it will dip to subzero at times during the winter.

and i hear stories of guys paying close to 50% of what they make on housing, you cant live in the company truck because that truck never stops moving, you work 12hours and someone else works the other 12

Son of a #####, am I right? I hear there are new apartments being built all over Wiliston( I spelled that wrong, but you should know which town I am talking about) Perhaps contact some of those people and reserve one if you're very serious about getting a job there.

I will definitely ask him about the connections but that is not something I want to rely on. #### man, you're right as an Employer I would rather hire someone that has more time on the road and finished school than someone that just has a CDL license........................ but then again I could pay that guy less.... and when the guy gets experience say 1 or 2 years it won't matter THAT much for the next employer, I think. :\
