We have one particular maroon, who nearly ripped an ICC bumper off a trailer. Because it was taking too long to look under the truck to confirm that the hook had disengaged.
Instead he jumped in jammed the gears and hit it twice, forcing the hook to disengage. In turn it pulled the bumper back nearly 6 inches such that you could have hung a plum bob down from the door and not hit the inside of the bumper.
He consistently has more poor reviews from customers, more call ins from motorists and more damaged freight on his trailer than any other driver in the company.
Keep in mind what you said OP, you ARE the captain of your truck. Only you decide how you want to run.Shock Therapy, x1Heavy and KB3MMX Thank this. -

I've had owners of trucks that I work for tell me the same mantra: "You are the captain of the ship."
Yet at the first opportunity they're trying to tell me that I can make Northeast to West 2,100 miles in 3 days "easy" and get an attitude when I tell them it will take 4 days winter driving.
It was magic when I realized that many brokered loads have at least a day or two window for delivery.misterG and Shock Therapy Thank this. -
Good that you're not being pushed around, but a "minimum of 8 seconds following distance" is a bit extreme. But hey, role with what makes you comfortable at this point in your career

I'll drive my truck and you drive yours. Most of those kind of people are not drivers, they don't even have enough common sense to know they look like a jack as and expose others to their stupidity. Stick to your professional attitude and safe driving. It will pay off.

i usually keep a comfortable distance behind vehicle ahead, i dont sit there and count the seconds. enough room that if i have to come to quick stop, i can. it seems like something so simple could avoid allot of casualties

Do you think the owner knows that his "trainer” is " training" in this manner? IDK, maybe its just me, but if it were my company I'd certainly want to know. I wouldn't hesitate to bring it up to him. If he's truly that dangerous the life you may have potentially saved might have been yours or your family. If you were to say something and it is not addressed, that would be my sign to roll out. The guy that risks his livelihood and others lives by either encouraging such behavior or even just knowingly turning a blind eye to it is not someone I'd want to work for.
Just saying.x1Heavy Thanks this.
