You can buy tires that are rated less than 6,000 pounds, and technically you would not be legal at 12,000. but I have never, ever seen any class 8 truck with a steer axle rated less than 12,000. many over, but never one under. Why would any truck manufacturer build a truck that could not legally haul a legal load.
A lot of states do not mess with it and allows 13000 or so anyway.
I keep mine at 13,500 and the dot here when inspecting, look at my sticker to get the weights. It has a 12000 pound axle, but they have never said a word.
I am confused on my CAT Scale weight

Under 78k gross with 46k on board, balanced on drives and trailer, under on steers. Looks good to me.

just keep in mind tho. if you trailer wheels are to much forward. it can pick up on the fifth wheel cause more weight on the steers too.

Somethings is not right if the wheels is far enough forward to start lifting the fifth wheel, in fact it would be a wreck in the making. It will take weight off of it, but not pick it up and put more weight on the steers.

I just re-weigh my truck and trailer empty and my steers went up. So, loaded heavy, my steers lose 1000 pounds. This is the most shift I have had in a truck. My Steer axle is almost 12k bobtail or attached to empty flatbed.. My tires are rated 6175 lbs each.
