A lot of nice people here on this forum.
I can recall driving there were a lot of nice people, but there were also a lot of yay hoos too, rude disrespectful. It got to the point where I ended up turning my radio off half the time. But one thing I learned, you break down and it won't be too long before another hand will come by and offer to help in one way or another, and this thread reflected just that.
When I trained in 1990 it was in the middle of winter and I never saw a flake of snow. Mostly L.A. loads. After my 30 days my trainer took me back to SLC where I got my own truck, (a real pos ford) and my first load to Seattle. So I get up to north Idaho (I think it was called 4th of july?) going down grade in the middle of night in a snow storm my low pressure gauge came on, I lost air pressure. Talking about one scared sob. Here I am fresh out of school.
I pulled over in time my spring brakes popped on and I skidded to a stop. It was like ten below and eventually an old hand stopped to help, my emergency line had froze and broken. He suggested I drop my trailer and bobtail and the next day get a new air hose,,, which I did. When I came back the next day all fixed up, the snow plows had come through and buried my trailer, I could not get back under it.
After getting that straight, I ended up in more mountains in WA and had to chain up twice, lol I didn't even know how to put a chain on. THis was all on my very first trip out. -

Before someone tells me thats what I get for going down the 4th in a snowstorm
I always recall hearing people brag "If chains are required then I just pull over". I even heard that recently on the bus at England.
Yes, in the perfect scenario thats all good, but I just wonder how many here have had incidents where your driving through the pass and all is well, no snow forecasted et. Then all of a sudden it starts to snow, and it gets worse and worse then the next thing you know in an hour chain laws go in effect, your butt is stuck, you either pull over and put the chains on to keep going or you sit on the median and eat out of that jar of peanut butter you forgot you had for 3 days -
Those are definitely challenges for a brand new driver. However, great fun is to be had if going between Yakima and southwest Washington on Hwy12. White Pass.
The Rockies might be high mountains with plenty of ice and snow between September and ...oh, say....June. But the Cascades are rugged with the NorthWest's unpredictable weather.sweetdaddy915 Thanks this. -

I love that drive south of Lewiston through Salmon River Canyon.that White Bird Grade going down into the canyon can be a lot of fun. Too bad I didn't know you were at the Grandview DC. Could have taken you to Garcia's for a great burrito.
Up on Snoqualmie, when storms come through and they say they're expecting 4, they mean feet, not inches.
Hrtbr8kr, I'll be heading west through the Blues and down Cabbage Hill in about an hour and a half. It was icy yesterday coming across and even though it's dry here today, you never know what you're going to get up there. What route did you take to get to Montana from there? You go up 15 in Idaho? Just curious.Last edited: Dec 18, 2011
