Maybe you need to consider an alternative? I know of one school here that charges $260 for 6 hours of refresher courses. Maybe that would help you out? If it would, let me know, and I'll send you the info.

I decided to try to get on with a company that will offer me orientation in my home state.

That is exactly what I am doing. CRE has offered me a refresher with the $1400 fee waved. I will be glad to NOT pay for it. I will then go to work for them and get some experience. Or, I will go to work for somebody else and get some experience. I don't really care who I go to work for, and figure all the companies are about the same.

There are a lot of experienced drivers out of work, and I figure the best available positions will go to them. I am new, so I will have to take the job nobody else wants, and maybe work for a company most experienced drivers do not want to work for. That's the way it is, and I know my place.

Later, when I have some experience, then maybe I too will be able to work for a great company. Maybe -- just maybe -- I will go to work for CRE and think I am working at a great company. Now THAT would be a prayer answered! It could happen.

    Sounds good.

I was all set up to start orientation with Swift. I had a road test with them the day before orientation was to begin, and they shocked me by saying I needed more training. They said to come back when I have 40 hours of driving documented. "Documented." What a crock. Oh well, that's what they said. That's what they want. Whatever it takes. So, 6 hours X 7 = 42, which would put me a little over the 40 hours. $260 X 7 = $1820. The refresher at CRE has no charge if I go soon. I have not yet asked so I do not know, but I suspect the refresher they offer will be more than 40 hours. I will call Monday to see if there is a catch to their "free" refresher offer, and find out if I am obligated to go to work for them afterwards.

I would love to look at whatever information you have, send it along please.

Thanks for the info and for thinking of me.

Maybe. If so it is not the 1st time nor will it be the last. What do I know about trucking companies? Nothing. This whole trial and error adventure is nothing but a journey into the unknown. I am just doing the deed and hoping for the best. And I am REALLY glad you folks are here to bounce off of, and I certainly value your opinion(s).

You might want to think before you jump into this, all these companies are NOT the same. For instance some companies treat there drivers like ####, while others threat there drivers like family. Some lie, cheat and steal from there drivers. Some pay really good some don't. Some have more miles then you could possibly drive, while some can barely keep there drivers moving. With some companies you can sit for days waiting for a load, with some you have another load lined up before you even get to your customer. Some companies will make you freeze when its cold and sweat when its hot just so they can save a few $$ on fuel. Some companies won't allow you to have things like (Inverters/microwaves/fridge) that not only save you ALLOT of money on the road but will keep you healthyer and make running out of hours at a rest area or a get on ramp less misserable.

And last but not least some companies will make you hate trucking so much so that you'll quit and never come back after you've invested all this money in it or better yet when you realize how BAD your company is and you leave they just might destroy your dac report thus keeping you from getting another job.....

    Just some food for thought!

    Good Luck

Nothing in life is free, almost guarantee you'll be obligated to CRE for the "free" refresher.

Do you really think a company will give you a free refresher out of the goodness of their hearts and not expect that you go to work for them?

Not trying to be a smart arse, but get real.

I did the England thing to get my CDL. Paid cash for their school so I wasn't obligated to stay. I even did three and a half months slave labor training with them. I won't try to talk you out of it, you need to get the experience somewhere AND learn what a company like this will do, so you'll know what to look for in the next place when you decide to quit. I now consider it a life experience, kinda like Marine Corp boot camp!

Just a thought, why not try finding a company that'll actually train you as a solo before being forced to run as a team? There are a few that do.
