Use a good commercial gps if not already, park outside the customer and walk and talk to them, and if special instructions save it on your phone so you have for the next time you are there, save their names too on your phone so you can greet them and if you remember people's name they are usually more helping. I don't know how your company works, but a smart one will usually try to keep you in the same area, so you should be comfortable with most of the streets in a few months. Also if you can't find something don't be afraid to ask a ups, fed ex, or usps truck one of those guys will know. Good luck.
I call upon the P&D's for guidance!!!

Good advice. Definitly get to be friendly with a UPS Parcel Guy/girl.
There are also more variables that you will run into.
You will frequent places that really dont have a shipping and rec. person. All they might do is put the LTL bills in a rack. You must find your bills, find the freight, sometimes shrink wrap it and then Pro-sticker it unless the shipper has your pros. Then load it yourself with a jack or forklift.
Some places dont even have a dock, just an overhead door.
Some customers use primarily Mega=carrier OTR trucks to ship volume shipments only. They use LTL to ship out machine parts to be repaired or an infrequent LTL shipment. Every Dock might be plugged with a line of trucks waiting to get in and there you come at 3:30
to Pickup One skid. You may have 4 more pickups closing at 4 pm and you will need to decide what you are going to do. LTL P&D requires
Hustling, planning and sometimes Lying your butt off to get your freight on and off. Have fun

[QUOTE="semi" retired;4152945]Hi Mark, I hear ya, you snooze you lose. It can get pretty cut throat out there, if I saw an open dock, I'd go for it. If you just had a pallet or 2, or 1 pick up, you'll be gone before the next guy gets there. My biggest pet peeve was 4 docks and 3 have trailers in them, and everybody fights over the 1 dock.

LINEHAUL was great when I did it and p/d sucks but it is nice having nights and weekends back. Plus I can run line haul on weekends so it gives me a nice check. Doing it tomorrow

One of the benefits of p/d is going to the same customers daily or weekly and getting to know the folks on first name basis. Also getting to know the super secret gate access codes to get into certain places
Big Don and superpet39 Thank this. -
