I just couldnt do the over the road thingy. I hired on to a company that promised weekends home. Well...it was ok during my training period. Missed a couple of weekends, but no big deal. Now that I have my own truck, I've been home a total of 2 full days in the last 40 days. By full days, I mean 1 whole day home. The two times I got home it was late Friday night and had to leave very early Sunday morning, like 1 or 2 am. That gave me Saturday to spend time with my wife, son and dog, do laundry, go shopping and pack again for the week or weeks.
I knew getting into this that I was going over the road, but I didnt figure that I would never get home.
The final straw was a nice preplan on Thursday for Friday delivery, pickup, then delivery in my hometown on Monday morning. Again, I wouldnt have gotten home til Saturday and have to leave early Monday morning, but at least I could go home for a day. Well....on the delivery they canceled my load home, gave it to someone else and gave me a horrible 250 mile run that delivers on Monday. That means the weekend off 800 miles from home. I dont think that was right.
Anyways, today....I am going home. I sent a message via qualcomm saying that I was going home. I parked and emptied the truck in their terminal, got a rental and told them they could let another driver have it if needed. Pretty sure they wont hold it for me. But, I am going home. Jobless.
For the drivers that are over the road that are out 2 and 3 weeks at a time, I dont know how you do it. I surely cant.
Thanks for reading. Sorry so long. I hope to find some work in my area for maybe a local farmer or sugar beet factory or something like that.
I couldnt do it

I am happy when I get home for just 34 hours every weekend, Better than no home. I am just happy to be getting my pay check each week.

I wish more people would come back like you and tell it like it is . I know a lot of members that were on the Welcome Wagon a few months ago don't come around anymore and I know it's not because they're running so hard they don't have the time . Many have made the same move you have . That's why carriers have to keep hiring . I hope you can find something local . Keep us posted .
PharmPhail Thanks this. -
Kudos for being more of a man than most.
We see the newbs come in all excited, then never hear from them again. Their story is pretty much the same as yours I suspect. They just aren't willing to "shame" themselves.
There's no shame in admitting you were wrong, or you're unable to handle the job. Except in your own mind.
Very few people realize the true cost of being away from home extended periods of times. And when we do, it's generally too late for most. -
Well, now you know and you can't say you didn't try. Good luck to you.
There were times I'd be out for 6 or 7 weeks, with the longest time away from home being four months, but that was by design.
Oh, and let me add: Though you are no longer OTR, this is no reason to stop coming here. Stick around. -
who did you drive for jimbomaz (if you dont mind me askin) ?

Right on, If more driver stuck up for what is right it would improve the industry for us all. Kudos man. Im in the cement industry mainly we get alot of home time. I have not worked a weekend for 2 years maybe more. I average 3000 miles per week, and get by the house 3 nights a week not counting the weekends. Loading takes 15 minutes or less, unloading takes about 30 - 45 minutes. Just a consideration. Oh yeah the pay last 3 years 58K 62K 61K

Well good luck and hopefully you can find something local. OTR life isnt easy and its for sure not easy being away from family and friends that long. I stay out two weeks at a time and I am home for two to three days. I think the hardest thing is talking to family or friends at home and they say oh yeah me an so an so are doing this, or we're gonna go out. It really makes ya want to be there and hang out with them to. But I love my job and love my paycheck especially in this economy so I cant complain. If I wasnt doing this id be living paycheck to paycheck working in some factory or something.

Thanks for all the great replies. I really want to drive. I love driving, I like big trucks. I think I know why it was so hard for me. Its because I went from working out of my home to living on the road. It wasnt too bad when I got home every weekend, but I really cant go for more than a week.
We've been financialy struggling for awhile now and I really feel that I let my wife down because the money was starting to come in. Although, she is driving 800 miles to pick me up. Didnt want to abandon the truck. I parked the truck in their drop lot and walked a couple of miles to a Walmart and called a cab to get to a motel.
I know there's no chance of me getting a local driving job, but I'm gonna look. Whether its driving for farmers or whatever, I'm gonna try. Probably going to have to fall back on my previous career which is in real estate and very unstable in Michigan.
Again...thanks for the great encouragement, I appreciate it. I'll keep you updated on what happens. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a local something and be home every night. -
very tough choice to quit...
might seem easy but I'm sure it wasn't...
