I'm so sick of hearing these words..."I don't run New York City!"
Then you ask the guy why and he starts babbling about traffic and how you can't get around in a truck and all of the other lameassed excuses that drivers come up with to cover up the fact that most of them are just scared or intimidated by N.Y.C.
I have heard no less than 5 drivers today utter those words and then within a minute or two, complain that they can't seem to "get the miles" they need/want.
If you don't want to run in the northeast, You are eliminating a large portion of the country that you could be "getting miles" in.
Most of these guys that say it's hard to get around in the city are probably driving Volvos or Centurys or some other cookie cutter short hood company nightmare and should have no problem getting around in the northeast and yet I keep hearing drivers say..."I don't run New York City!"
I've run up there a lot over the years and I have been into the city a few times in the last year and have enjoyed the trip each time I've gone in...
Don't be scared kids, It's just another city!
I don't do New York City!

I had a great time when they sent us up there. I was so new I still had a price sticker on my foot but I managed quite well. It was fun, exciting and frankly I enjoyed it each time AND I enjoy knowing I can do what scares many.

Some people are scared of everything you do.....
You be nice to REDD tonight and don't wear the boy out!ronin, The Challenger and Wargames Thank this. -
I am scared of NYC because I had a horrible experience the one time I was sent up there to deliver in Brooklyn.
I'll drive through it though on 95 on the way up to the northeast or from the northeast. That part doesn't bother me.Wargames, ronin and The Challenger Thank this. -
Here's the thing, it's all about timing - if you're leaving the truckstops at Bordentown to head into NYC, and you're rolling out at 0630 for a 0800 appointment, you're a blithering moron. Get up, get there at 0400-0500... unload, and by the time it's all done, traffic will have chilled a bit.
I ran into NYC and Northern NJ 3-4 days a week, left Lansdale (near philly) at 0230-0300, had an early appt, done around 1000-1030, home at noon, or chose a regional backhaul.
It's all about planning, just like with LA, Seattle, Atlanta, St Louis, Dallas or any other major city/area.The Challenger, popmartian, Mdbluecrab and 3 others Thank this. -
Black W900 - had a "buddy" at Total that had followed me to two other companies over the years... his favorite line was always "I told that mother (you know) that I wasn't going to (insert possibly difficult task here)".
He's had 13 jobs in the 3.5 years I've known him, hasn't had a happy day in his life, I don't think, and got deleted from my phone when I switched services and phone numbers a few months back. -
Wargames Thanks this.

I liked Brooklyn and Manhattan but I had easy trips, had a flattop truck w/ flatbed so I used tunnels into Manhattan and I ALWAYS went into the city before 5am, Its how I planned my trips out. I probably went through the Lincoln tunnels 25 times and to Brooklyn twice.
