Been there, done that...many times, and I didn't enjoy any of them! (still remember the address of the first delivery there in Manhattan...544 West 44th street)

I go when I have to...my gripe isn't so much downtown traffic, its the mess that begins in DC and doesn't thin out until CT (mess of traffic, impossible to dodge the rush hour all the way up or down)...you know, its called I 95.

And don't get me started on getting across the GW bridge at the wrong time of day...same reason I don't do Canada (I flat refuse Canada, I'll walk home before going back)...just too much traffic, too much wasted time, and I got spoiled running to the left coast for too long.

I see your point blackw900, but I prefer to get my miles where there is more open road.

    Towns I've been "lost" in...

    Wilkes Barre, PA (twice :yes2557:)
    Fayetteville, NC (twice :yes2557:)
    Pittsburgh, PA
Cinnaminson, NJ (trying to find the AFG plant...its a family tradition to get lost there on the first trip in...my uncle did, my Dad did...so I felt obligated)
Oh...and Ft. Hood (the military base)...that place is HUGE!...I'll have to tell that story sometime (I had to enter the gate about 6 different times...it was hilarious)

Its something about the way Fayetteville is laid out...kinda lopsided...it messes with my sense of direction :biggrin_2559:

That place is like the Bermuda Triangle for me...

Ok to be serious a minute--it isn't the way it is laid out--it IS that it was built around 2 US Highways and 2 military bases--nowadays--most people come in off of I95 which came much later and by the time you wind off of 95 which really kinda runs on a funny angle outside of town--it can be hard to get your bearings

Over the past year or so, we have been taking bridge beams & cross braces into Manhattan & the Bronx for the Willis Ave bridge. The ones we took were not oversize and we had to be escorted across the GW and to the job site every time because of the 53' rule. Somebody made alot of extra money on that considering (if I remember right) it was $140 just to cross the GW.

OK I am missing something here--you were NOT oversized? and you needed an escort? Overweight maybe? Got to be more to this--or somebody got hosed by NYC DOT?

Well, in a city willing to ban salt in restaurants and smoking anywhere in public, why would it surprise anyone that a trucker would get hosed?

Not oversize/overweight at all... When we asked at the job site why, they said that it was because of the 53' rule that is (usually) never enforced.

I would imagine that it had something to do with the company building the bridge had to be compliant with all the local laws. Let me tell you how much of an idiot you feel like having to sit with all the other OD loads waiting to cross the bridge...:biggrin_2556:
