If you do decide to do trucking, keep up what your doing. Don't rent a place. Don't buy anything that will tie you to somewhere. Heck move back in with your parents, it prob won't cost you anything. And your parents would LOVE to have you around the house for the little time you will be off work. That itself will save tons of money that you can save to spend later on a truck or a house. If anyone makes comments about you still living with your parents, they can go pound sand. Why waste money on something you would stay at or use a few days a month?

Thanks for the help everyone. To quinid my state of residence was Missouri when i joined so i wouldn't get that Illinois benefit you were talking about. My residence was only about 12 miles from Illinois though kinda ironic how a few miles could mean the difference between getting something and not getting something. To notarps4me that is exactly what my granfather and dad both did. My grandpa flew b-52's in WW2 and was a POW and when he got out got a government desk job. My dad was drafted in Vietnam and when he got out also got a job working for the gov't. I'll keep that as an option but I would like to do my own thing and not really get too tied down right now. Trucking just seems really appealing to me at this stage. I do want to use the education benefits i have and get a business degree but right now i need money and as much as i can make so i want to get at least a couple or so years in otr and then try and get a local driving job where i could go to school in my offtime. I eventually would like to own my own business so i just want to work as much as possible and save as much money as possible for the near future. Does anyone know any good trucking companies based out of or headquartered in texas? I'd like to make texas my residence when i become a trucker because of their non existent income tax and some of their state laws. It also seems as if texas held it's own during this downturn in the economy so i figure maybe that's better for the companies based in that state meaning more freight maybe. Thanks again for the help everyone.

I too would like to thank you for your service in the military. You seem to have really thought this through and really want to make a better life for yourself. It sounds to me that at this point in your life, driving would be a great choice. Keep reading the posts on the Truckers Report and learn as much as you can. I know that there are many drivers on the forums that will help you make good, sound decisions. Good luck to you!

Wow, i wouldn't have guessed that about texas given that 3 of americas top 10 most populated cities are in texas and that the economy in texas remained strong when others went down. I guess that's why i'm not a good gambler, lol. So do most truckers think like i was thinking though and get domiciled in states that have no state income tax?

Thanks for the kind comments and support Retired i appreciate it. Quinid i know there are other states that have their own individual benefits for veterans on top of the federal benefits. Unfortunately for me my state Missouri dosen't have anything extra i could use. I can't remember all of them off the top of my head but the Illinois one seems generous. I'm glad you got to use it since you deserved it, thanks for your service and support too. If i remember correctly i think texas also had something really similar to illinois in that if you were a resident and remained a resident before and after enlistment you could get 100% tuition at state schools. Also connecticut has something where you can get 100% tuition to any state school regardless of if you were a resident there when you enlisted you just have to be a current resident for 1 year and have served in any military conflict since 1991, so that is generous. Uconn is in connecticut and many consider that a public ivy school so if you know anyone that is smart and a vet have them check that out especially if they live in the northeast. The new post 9/11 gi bill has the deal where you can get tuition paid at private schools too. I think there are some nice names on the list too like columbia and stanford if i'm not mistaken and they match the gi bill payment it's called yellow ribbon or something. The gi bill now is much better than the one my grandpa and dad both got i feel bad that they didn't get better benefits back then.

I picked up mag from local unemployment office called GI Jobs. Their website is obvious (I tried to included link but this is my first post and web admin said no links possible now). One feature article of June edition was interview with Schneider's VP driving recruitment- Michael Hinz. He says they need 2500 drivers NOW.
I would check them out. He likes to hire ex-vets because they have "self motivation and self-discipline." I don't know about that, never having served- from what I've been led to believe your drill sgt has a lot to do with motivation and discipline :)

If your single then trucking could make you a lot of money. My trainer was making over 20000 a month running solo. Then there were months he was only making 1000. So its a trade off. If the single, solo, lonely life doesn't bother you then trucking may work for you. I just recently got into trucking and i am glad i did. i like it. you get to see the country, meet some INTERESTING people, and get paid to drive around.
