Hate to break it to you, but it is. There have been a couple of threads in the last two years about YRC training, and they match up with everything the mega do, with the exception of manual transmission. It's a step above cdl mills, but that's it.
New driver pay is about the same once everything shakes out. Change out otr for dock work and extra board - pick your poison. YRC trucks engage in just as many turtle races as anyone else, and end up in the ditch with the same frequency as well.
It's not a bad company, it's not a good company, it's just a mega.
I don't know why people go to mega for cdl school.

What difference does it make? People make decisions unbeknownst to you and I.
haz-matguru, nredfor88, MIT and 1 other person Thank this. -
I wanted nothing to do with being tied to anyone with a sword dangling over my head.
When you use their school, it always costs more than community College.
Like 2 to 3 times more.
Then you're shackled to them until it's paid for, k in full.
They have you by the short curlies for all long as they see fit.
I used WIOA, got a grant that paid for school, and had my choice of who I wanted to drive for.
Had 11 offers the day I graduated... Offers in hand, that is.
I chose local gas hauling.
I have a family and a farm, and being home is primary for me.
I make excellent money, home every night, and nobody can hold anything over my head if I feel like changing companies.surf_avenue, 2Tap and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
You can't get government education loans and pell grants for trade school. I looked into workforce grants and there was a year long waiting list to maybe get funds from my state's employment commission.
It's already been said but $3k to $5k is a big upfront cost for most people and even more so when you can't work at the same time.
I ended up paying out of pocket and used debit for some and a 0% for a year CC for the rest. -
I went to a Mega because I didn't have the money at the time to pay for CDL school. I have the auto restriction and the schools here in Vegas want 3k-5000 just to remove my auto restriction. I might as well take the whole #### CDL class again for that price. I had my license for 3years now, only reason I want to remove the auto restriction is because I'm getting denied left and right from local companies because I have the restriction.
-
Auto restriction? Why? Who the flying F would saddle you with that? Are you missing an arm or leg that would require that??
You don't need a new school to remove that restriction. You only need practice using manual (2 days, maximum) and someone willing to let you use a truck for a test drive for DMV. Even if you have to pay someone to get that done, it shouldn't be more than $500 total PLUS whatever DMV will charge for the test out.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
The school I went to only had autos. They didn't have any manual to learn on. I don't know anyone who has a manual truck to learn on.
-
The school might be the same but the job is completely different and the benefits aren't even comparable.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this.

Look at it this way - YRC is the mega of the ltl world. If you had your choice of ANY ltl company would YRC be at the top of the list or towards the bottom?rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

Given the four choices you mentioned, YRC would be at the top of my list even though I wouldn't even consider it since I have much better options available to me.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this.
