I heard that you have to study it before going to school because it's fast-paced. Should I actually cumbersomely visit a local DMV building to get the hardcopy? This is the one I downloaded: www.michigan.gov/documents/cdlmanul_16090_7.pdf
I downloaded a 2007 Michigan CDL Manual

I'd say go with what you have. It should contain all of the current information you will need.
-
OK, enuff with the smart arse bit here. (yeah as if I could ever stop. . .)
Anyway, you do need the latest information, but I don't know that you need to go in and "buy the book." And yes, I'm betting they would charge for it.
But whatever, if you feel like you really want the book, (and it IS a very good reference tool,) then get it. But you will (or at least you SHOULD) get whatever information you need from your class. You are already going to pay a premium for your class, so why add to your cost.
I know you say that you need to study it before the class, but do you know that for a fact, or is it just something you "heard" from somebody else who "heard" from a friend who had a friend. . .
At any rate, states do change laws from time to time, so be sure that what you have is the most current available. Nothing wrong with downloading, and it is usually cheaper than buying the hard copy.
But the hard copy is something you can actually study any time you have the chance to read something, whereas if you down load it, you can only read it off your computer. Unless you are willing to take the time and go to the expense of printing everything.
The book is a whole lot easier to handle than a bunch of loose leaf printed sheets, so if you decide to go this route, get yourself a three hole punch and a big binder. . . -

Does your local library have it? Ive gotten a couple of study guides from mine so they might have the manual as well.

If I get the the 2010 CLD manual from Florida (where I'm at) will there be no substantial difference? I will going back to Michigan at the end of this month or so.
-
YES THERE IS LIKELY TO BE DIFFERENCES! Different states do have different laws!
You should be able to get the book from Michigan via the mail. Check the website for the Michigan DMV (or whatever they happen to call it there.) There will likely be an email address to contact them, or a phone number.
The code books that I bought here in Utah, I was able to order them by email, pay with a credit card, and receive the book via mail. (Of course with the crap about our state DMV and the "alien list," I really don't think I'd trust them with a credit card number right now. . .) -
if you are going to a CDL school as part of your tuition, you should be getting this manual. the "latest" revised copies i have go back to sept of 2009.........
unless the state laws have drastically changed in michigan then that older copy will do. i do not see any need to go to the DMV, the downloaded copy will serve you.
"some" of the differences "might be",.......
after how many miles/hours should you pull over to check your load, once you leave the yard........(and i just checked this, its the same as 2 states i deal with)
how many ties downs for a flat bed(and i just checked this too, its the same)
these are at least 2 things that might be different, as i deal with 3 states for CDL training. so i have to say, ok, you guys from state A, here is YOUR answer, state B, this is your answer, state C, this is yours.........
as i just quickly browsed thru michigans manual, from the very first page and "up to" section one, i do see some minor differences, like you got color, and some traffic laws and the fee structure ........but from section one, and beyond.........its all the typical CDL manual.
lupe Thanks this.
