In this article, during the 3:15-6:15 time span, it says:

"After three more hours on the road, the driver finds a truck stop -- there are three in West Memphis, Ark. -- and shuts down for his mandatory ten-hour rest break. His off-duty clock kicks in at 7:00 p.m., which is 14 hours since he entered the terminal that morning".

The way I do it is to start my 10hr break as soon as I flag a post-trip. The driver in the story waited 45 minutes before starting his. Am I wrong? I drove local for 7 years and have only been doing OTR for just under a year, and have been using paper logs for 4 months, with no inspections during that time. Thanks in advance.

The problems started when he stopped in West Memphis. Nothing good comes out of West Memphis with the exception being I 40.

Your 10 starts as soon as you sign off on your post trip. No waiting.

    Wingnut1 Thanks this.

You can Log off anytime you want, You can be (on duty) for 80/90+ hrs if you wish. But can't drive over 14 hours or until you finish your 10 hr brake. If you drive the hole time during your 14hrs, you would be 3 hours over your 11:00hrs of the driving rule. So you have to watch both numbers.
If you are using a on board electronic log(Qual Com). Same rules apply as long as you do not move the truck after logging to onduty. You need to log off for your 10hr to start. Also once a week you need to approve your logs. If not after a week and a half or so. it shuts you down or somthing. It happened to me. Not sure of the spacifics on that. Just know it can only hold so many log days.

My preference is to log off as soon as i stop after the post trip. If you keep the clock running to your 14. Then you will loose money in the long run before your 70. By the end of the week you might be able to get an extra run. If Im wrong please advise. Thanks

    Wingnut1 Thanks this.

So many things wrong in that article!!! Starts his day with a 30 minute Line 4....should have been 15, locate trailer hook and pretrip both units in same block of 15! It continues and gets more offensive to any logical driver!!!:biggrin_25513:

I hear ya. I run between the upper midwest and either Laredo or Brownsville and avoid that area all together. I jump off the big road in Hayti, MO and take 412 to 67/167 to 30 at Little Rock. I usually stop at the truck stop in Bald Knob, AR for a bite to eat. Going this way takes me around the clusterfk in West Memphis, a couple of coops and the construction. Proof that at least some of us rookies know how to read a road atlas! :biggrin_25525:

Yep, too many things wrong. You'd think they would have at least proof read it if they wanted to make a serious point. To the uninformed it probably looks good though.

And when I go to Brownsville, I hang a left at Texarkana on 59. Never heard of a "49" running there.

Thanks for the replies--I thought I was right, just wanted to make sure!
