    Hi

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what i should do. Here is the story I got my class A from a state college in duluth MN. I was so new to the industry that I really didn't know what i was doing. I really wanted to do local work. Didn't really matter to me what it was or how much it pays. But because i was in college at the time and due to a badly broken arm my work history stinks. I ended up working with swift. I wasn't with them long enough to really like them or dislike them. But after training i new that otr was not for me. But i didn't know what else to do except do my time and get out. Well after my 6 weeks i came home and all hell broke lose. My grandfather died, my dads work slowed down and then he got sick. I just couldn't go on the road i need to be home. So I left them before i got a truck. Well that was back in late feb early march of 2009. Sense then i have been helping my parents start up their own business. But due to the economy and all that good stuff that has just fallen apart after we put a lot of money and time into it. I really would love to get back in a truck to make some money for them. I have tried to get work in other fields but no one is hiring in my area. I would love to drive a truck again to start making money to support the fam. But I also take care of a lot of stuff around the house plus as I stated above OTR is not for me. I guess I'm asking if there is any possibility for me to get a local gig? And what steps would i have to do if there is. Thanks so much for you're time, and sorry for the long post, but I'm at my wits end.

p.s. I live in st. paul mn.

Knock on every door you can find... you will have to take a road test and show them you can drive and are a safe driver..but local jobs can be found.. I found one..pays by the hour.. I love it.. I did OTR for years.. still get to go out some times.. but they pay for a motel..since I'm in a day cab:) .. just keep looking and applying..

Try any kind of construction company. Even the city/county highway department. You might even try a utility company (i.e. your power, gas, or water companies).

For the most part, I think your going to have to get retrained since most companies want that after you been out of the truck for over a year, with little to no experience. Also, you may want to get a DAC Report on you and see if Swift put anything on it and than if they did put something on it, you may want to go to DAC FIX and get them to get it off (this is gonna cost you something). Otherwise, I would go to Transport America there in Minnesota, they are a good starter company to work for and you will get good miles with them and good hometime. Hope to see you in an 18 wheeler someday

well I love driving trucks, and I love driving period. But the whole otr live style is just not for me. Because i just don't like being away from home. I love where i live and i love my home life. Plus I need to be around for know to help out around the home. Maybe latter in life i will try it again but for now local sounds perfect. Plus I'm one of those weird people that loves traffic and driving a big truck on small streets and close quarters. That is just right up my alley. And I know that i love that sorta of work and because of that it will make me a better worker. Could i do otr ? sure but i wouldn't be 100% into it, and that could be dangerous. My goal is to become a good driver not a complacent one or one that hates his job.

Thankyou. I have been doing that. I guess i just got to keep looking. At this point i don't even care what they pay. just want to get a job and go. Getting payed well would be great, but i have no money, so getting payed at all would be just fine with me:biggrin_255:
