I got a new job and one of the duties I'll have is Ill be required to drive a yard tractor to position trailers on dock doors and what not. Company policy requires that I pass a DOT physical and drug test. I can easily pass the drug test, as I don't use; but I know that I will not be able to pass the physical. I was wondering how much information will be passed from the doctor to my employer as to why I wont pass the physical. Does my employer receive a report of everything that is right and wrong with me or is it a pass/fail type of document sent to my employer? The condition isnt too serious, but I'm rather self conscious about people knowing about my medical issues.

it's a dot physical. there is a long form filled out. but it's a plain abd simple physical. if you can't pass then you can't drive. it's not a full blown medical.

what have you got that you woin't pass anyways?

You may be looking for a job again...as far as I know the examining Dr. must report his findings to your employer or perspective employer..if you don't pass the required DOT physical then I'd say you would not be able to do that job..if the company policy requires you to pass the physical.

Welcome to The Trucker's Report dtmb.

I'm curious, does the yard jockey position require a CDL-A license?
Do you have any experience driving a Big truck?
If you don't pass the DOT physical will you be out of a job?
Will the company report a failure to pass the DOT physical to any agencies that could follow you when applying for jobs in the future? If so, it might be in your best interest to divulge your concerns to your potential employer before such information is revealed with a DOT physical.

Nobody here knows who you are. Is there any chance you'd be willing to explain why you wouldn't be able to pass a DOT physical?

Driving the yard truck will be one of many duties I will be responsible for. I do not need a CDL to drive the truck, but for insurance reasons, I assume, I have to get cleared by a Dr. to drive the truck. I likely wont lose the job for not being able to drive the truck. I've actually been employed by the company for six years now, but until now I haven't had a job that required me to consent to a DOT physical. I have epilepsy and it is an automatic failure for a DOT cert., I have medication and it is controllable. I was just wondering if that info will be passed to my employer. I'd prefer for them not to know about it, but I guess its going to come out one way or another.

99% I wont be required to drive the truck, as I will be managing 30 people and I have people that are certified to drive it. However, my employer prefers to have as many people as possible certified for yard work as possible.

Most Dot physicals aren't to in depth. Not sure of your condition but you need to be truthful and forthcoming with the doctor so you will know where you stand. You aren't driving over the road so even with restrictions you should be fine.

Then there is the "wellness exam". Your employer may or may not do this. What it boils down to is the wellness exam basically helps weed out workmans comp claims.

Maybe provide us with a little more info and we can help you more.

    he has epilepsy.

but the doc won't need to tell future prospective employees. because they simply ask for a medical card. either he has it or he don't. but they probably ask those medical questions on the application. when applying.

and my understanding from a previous employer. is ALL employees have to have a medical card if they are to drive ANY vehicle that is required to be registered with DOT and have the number posted on hte vehicle. that company was construction. even the pickups had to have the DOT number labled on the doors. which means everyone but the ladies in the office had to have a med card. the ladies never drove the company vehicles. only worked in the offoice. to which there were only 3.

Curious, does your state DMV know you have epilepsy, and if so, are you licensed to drive 4 wheeler ?

I can drive a car as I have not had a seizure in many years so I am able to drive a personal vehicle. Even if I were to have a seizure I wouldn't lose my license, but it would be medically suspended for 6 months to make sure that the epilepsy is under control.
