I'm paying for my CDL A out of pocket, and am scheduled to start trucking-school in March of next year. I won't have an automatic restriction. My plan is to start trucking next year.

    My MVR is as follows;
    11/2019 - At fault accident
06/20 - Driving wrong way road / highway. (passed double-lines on motorcycle to pass)

I'm at almost three years on these, and have cleaned up my driving. I want to get into tanker/bulk, preferably with a manual truck. If I can't get into tanker/bulk, I'd atleast like to OTR using a manual truck if possible so I can keep my manual skill. North-East driving like NYC, Chicago, are all okay with me so I can learn better.

I appreciate any advice you seasoned drivers have for me, even if the advice is harsh. I prefer it straight. Thanks.I live near Minneapolis, MN in Hudson, WI. I'm 29 years old.

edit; post title should be "i'm getting' my CDL-A", google autocorrected me

I would suggest it's better to get into bulk/tanker, even if it's automatic, than drive manual in dry van/reefer. Tanker is SO MUCH better than van/reefer. Manual is good to learn, but it's disappearing quickly.

I'm okay with getting into tanker, even if it's with an automatic. Tanker / bulk is really what I want to get into. I don't mind if the pay is low just to get the experience.

I'd recommend Quality Carriers, Indian River, and Oakley Transportation if you are in their hiring area. I worked for QC for 3 years.

Guess I ain't been at it long enough to get disappointed with a manual.? Only been driving truck since '13..

Quite frankly, if one GAVE me an auto truck, I'd drive straight to somewhere to yank it out for a standard Fuller..

Based on the current economy I'd recommend getting the CDL first, then find somebody to work for, gain some experience and then search out your dream gig.
Maybe @Chinatown can give you a recommendation or two for bulk trucking companies that will train after you've got your license w endorsements.

I agree. I'm planning to get my CDL first, then look for a company.

I'd try Indian River Transport. Recently hiring new cdl school grads.
Nearest terminal is Cedar Rapids, IA. You're probably in the hiring area.
    rucks:
    • Indian River Transport runs a late model tractor fleet consisting of 600 Peterbilt tractors.
    • All trucks are furnished with refrigerators and premier interior packages, over 70-inch sleepers.
    • All tractors are assigned and are less than 36 months old.
