I have my class A cdl but I need more practice specially driving the truck and changing gears, So im considering going to Swift academy to learn more. I wanted to go straight to orientation and skip the academy to save me $4000 but I think im not going to pass the road test. Since I have my class A license is the academy is going to be diffrent for me? Because I know the academy suppose to also help you get your license.

There was at least one or two guys at the academy I went to that had their cdl license beforehand that went through the whole course with those who were learning so that they could get theirs. Swift, will require you to have training at an approved site before they send you to orientation and hire you. When you go to the academy and graduate from there you will have to go with a mentor for 240 hours. Now unless things have changed be ready for it even though you have it currently. Best of luck to you!

They won't expect you to be a master on the road test since you're a beginner...just don't hit anything and you'll be fine...they'll be sending you out with a road trainer where you'll get the practice you need in real time real situations.

Why did it take you five months? Were you sick? Mentor sick? A lot of home time? Did you switch mentors a lot? There are a lot of unknown factors in what you just told the op not to do. Help him make a more big picture move for himself.

Good for you for wanting to learn more. Some wanna hurry up and get cdl, training and their own trk.But that is'nt how trucking works.Actually I don't think any starter company would accept you without schooling even though you have your cdl.

Go to expedite straight truck . You'll have no problem getting an automatic and start at full pay . It would be best to team with an experienced driver for a while though .
Expedite you can run 3 or 4 weeks then get a full week off .

Go to Central Refrigerated or Prime Inc. next. Both companies have formal training and no money up front. Prime offers refrigerated, flatbed, tanker.

Swift 6 years ago was going to put me directly out with a trainer NO academy since I had gotten my cdl on my own. I actually learned quite a bit in cdl school.

Swift academy is three weeks, then a couple days of orientation, and then 6 or so weeks with a mentor. A guy is in my class who has his class A and might be moving on to orientation by the end of the week. Depends on how you drive I guess.
