I was going to put that in my first reply...
Some states you shoot the guy coming at you with a machete you will be apologized to for having to do so and go on about your business. Other places (and Canada) you had better be good at hiding the body, because you will be seen as the criminal regardless of the circumstance. How that would effect you as the owner of the trucking company? Not sure. Are US carriers legally required to have an official firearm policy as part of the hiring process? It was not in any of the authority setup stuff anywhere I've read. Would you limit your liability by having a policy that states any driver who wishes to carry must abide by all laws for all jurisdictions we operate in - and have the driver sign it? All of that would be the legal argument if it ever came to that.

Easier to just say No sorry we don't allow that. On the other hand I am a firm believer in your 2nd amendment. (as an outsider looking in) Not an easy choice.

I've never had this come up. I agree with you about the need, and also support the 2nd and am a CWP holder. If this were to come up, I'd share how I feel about carrying a firearm in the truck not being a good idea. Delivery locations with "no guns" posted and several not-gun-friendly states on usual lanes. If the candidate was not agreeable to how I see it, I would probably pass on that hire. You don't need to debate the topic at length, or make a political statement. Just decide if it's something you yourself have a problem with. If you do have a problem with it, let him carry his gun in someone else's truck.

as stated, your truck, your rules

however the "what if's" come into play here as well..

what if he shoots someone by mistake?

what if he kills the perp?

and so on and so forth.

are you prepared to cover the lawsuits if your insurance carrier denies claims?

and those lawsuits will be legion.

you wanna lose the business you built all for someone's protection?

what you need to really do is, speak with IN PERSON with your attorney and run by him/her a bunch of "what if's"

i just finished watching a rerun of Boston Legal, so i;m an expert like everyone else here is....on the law.....right..???

don't take truckers a advice over a professional attorney's advice.

you may also want your attorney to draft up a policy for (or against) weapons and your legal limits in any lawsuit, let the driver SIGN AND answer to those, should he disobey your rules.

I don't carry in my truck I do carry openly at home especially this time of year when the Bears are coming out of the dens I will have my 41 magnum tied on but if somebody comes at me with a knife or a gun on in a parking lot or something like that I have no problem running his ### over and for just FYI Idaho residents can carry concealed in the state without permit

I won't hire them. There are exceptions and that is not discussed on any forum.

The problem is when it is used, even if it is legally used, I will be liable.

As long as they have a valid carry permit and are cognizant of what states may not recognize it I am fine.

No different than if they fall asleep at the wheel and wipe out a family.
Part of the chance we take when hiring folks.

Will you view yourself as equally liable to the widow and kids to support them if your driver needed to protect himself and was unable due to your policy? Works both ways. Your employee is entitled to a safe work environment. If you employ a CCW permit holder but deny them the ability to carry where it is legal, and then you send them somewhere they get robbed or murdered, you can still be held accountable in some jurisdictions. Personally, I'd rather be sued by the family of a thug who attacked my employee than to have to break the news to his widow that he was murdered because I decided it was best for him to be a soft target...and I know if anything happened to my wife at work which she might have been able to defend against if not for her employer's policy, they'd be right at the top of the list of who would be sued. If you aren't going to support the family of your deceased employee if he gets murdered on the job, then you have no right to say he cannot defend himself.

...And that is on him, since he’s the one in possession of the gun.
