I started school a month ago. Was doing good with my driving, learning how to double-clutch, and downshift (I drive a standard so I knew about upshifting), watching my tires making sure I made the corners good. I was even starting to do good with my backing...straight line, switch lane, 90 degree..........Then I started having issues with my ex, which caused a lot of stress that manifested itself in my backing and they all went in the toilet.
After repeating the labs, mornings being OK to good, and afternoons in the toilet, I was really getting frustrated. I think I spent more time crying while trying to back than I did backing........after almost quiting school last week I came home and told my ex to get out and stay out of my life. Took 2 days off and started in again last Monday.
Monday was OK, straightline on the range road, about 1/8 of a mile....did it several times. Tuesday was better, more straightlines then did switchlanes on the road, using about half the length, almost perfectly on each side.
Wednesday I get put out in a BIG lot with no references and have to back up about 4-5 rig lengths, putting the little tiny cone at my back end, one side at a time. As long as I was straight on, I could do it. A little off on the side and I had problems, more with the right than the left................Today started off good, small switchlanes into a "dock" of cones, easy right side cone landing. But when I would pull forward slightly off center, trying to realign that right cone....THAT STUPID CONE DISAPPEARED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I couldn't get it back in sight for nothing.
I can back that truck up pretty as you please right next to another truck, but those cones are killing me!!!! And my instructor won't let me progress until I can get it together with the cones. Tomorrow he said we would use the 2 blue 55 gallon drums stacked on top of each other....LOL
I Hate Cones!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hated cones when I was in school, too. I started imagining the cones were people I didn't like, and aiming straight for them until my instructor told me to quit screwing around.

Hang in there musicgal, you can do it, just take your time and put that trailer between those cones. if you think you are having fun now wait until you see some of these loading docks you have to back into.

Are they chocolate or strawberry? Don't pressure yourself with over thinking while you are backing...try and relax and do everything SLOWLY...backing is done at idle speed in real time driving and docking. One trick is to place your hand (right) on the bottom of the steering wheel palm down, (this stops you from over steering and makes the trailer movement less to think about, as the direction you move your hand is the direction the back of the trailer will move. Eliminates the "opposite direction" thought process as when your hand is at the top of the steering wheel. Top of the wheel is for forward movement direction, bottom of the wheel is for reverse...simple when practiced!
The biggest thing is to not beat yourself up over little mistakes...don't expect perfection, ever...we all have days we can't get that trailer to go where we want it..just part of the fun of the game I guess.
One more thing will help...don't move around in your seat, sit still, with your left hand grab onto the window strut and keep yourself in one place in the seat. Whenever you lean forward, or move into the mirror for a better angle of vision, you change the perspective of vision, then you will tend to over steer....kablammo now your fighting yourself...just relax, stay still, stay slow!
and most of all....make it fun! Things sink in better when being enjoyed...much like sex...so I am told...married to long forgot about it myself! -
and remember to keep things in perspective, it's much better to squash a few cones now as you get the hang of things, than to squash some yuppies BMW!

Otherhalf, thank you for the "hand" position. I had read somewhere, when you're doing the 90, to put your hand on the top and if you feel like you need to reposition, then you have turned too far. I usually have both hands on the wheel and even tho I know which way to turn, I'm slow at doing it. My instructor doesn't like me to stop, but I am getting better at catching the trailer before it goes very far. I go really slow, but he likes to tell me "You might only have x amount of time to get that truck in there so you need to go a little faster."......BTW, I would never run over a chocolate cone....strawberry, yes....LOL
I've been pre-hired at Tyson and he knows that they put you through a pretty tough backing test, so he's trying to get me ready for that, too. My instructor is a third party tester and was actually down at Tyson last week training the Trainers about Vehicle Inspections. He has a brand new stocking cap from them that says "Tyson" on it and was going to use it keep me motivated...LOL -

I don't know if your instructor told you this, aw heck I will...I will...
Use your imagination...visualize an imaginary line (a curve, just like the shape of a banana) I call it the "banana profile"...try and keep the rear tire (drivers side) on your imaginary line, all the way through the curve....your line will put your rear tire right where you want it. Now as you get into your dock position, start bringing the nose of the tractor around...slow and easy. Using this method, you shouldn't have to stop at all...just smooth and slow all the way around the banana line, squaring the tractor and front of the trailer as you pass the half way point of the docking area.
Now what was that they say about Tyson...don't let the pecker chicken you...nope that's not right....don't let the chicken pecker you....almost...I got it...don't let the chick peck you! -
