Yeah the smart phone would be required. The app uses location services to coordinate your request for a ride and complete the transaction. I don't see why you couldn't use a debit or reloadable gift card, provided it carried a Visa or AMEX logo. You enter your destination and get a quote, then pay. It's a flat rate. A ride all the way across Philadelphia during the afternoon rush hour cost me $65. I am certain a taxi would have been substantially more. The driver was 2 blocks away when I posted the request. A neatly dressed young guy in a nearly new Honda Accord. Way better than a clapped out crown vic that smells like armpits and feet.

This takes me back, one serious story and one funny one.

I think you did the right thing saying what you did. I think too many are programmed to accept status quo and not challenge things. This is something that a good manager would encourage and seek out. To me, what your truck manager has told you is that gee-whiz reporting capability is more important than driver satisfaction. The fact that he continued to justify it tells me he absolutely was not listening. The message I am hearing is that the value you offer as a loyal, productive driver is less than cool reporting tools. Sounds like the kind of truck manager that will also be a fan of other things that will enhance management visibility at the expense or inconvenience of the driver (no extra pay for the trouble, of course). Driver facing cameras come to mind.

So on a lighter note, here's my never-know-who-youre-talking-to conversation story. In 2007, I accepted a job offer to work for a German conglomerate. I think the reason I got the offer is they needed representation at a huge planning meeting. The next day. In Munich. I was probably the only applicant that had a passport and a credit card with enough room on it to cover my hotel for a week. But I digress. So I accept and take the trip, meeting goes as well as could be expected.

Because of the immediate travel, I still needed to go into the local (Atlanta) office and have a witness sign off on my I-9 form upon return. My manager was based in Raliegh, NC so couldn't do it. Her boss was in south Florida, so she couldn't do it. So now I'm given a name to visit with to get this done finally. He's a VP. Well alrighty then, let's git-r-done.

I drop by at the appointed time. Nice guy. Idle #### chat. Nice to meet you and what not, while checking my passport for the form to make sure I'm legal to work in the US. But he keeps glancing up. Finally asks me, "Did you just come back from Munich two days ago on Delta?"

Hmmm. "Yes I did. I didn't recognize you. Where were you seated?"

He says, "Yeah I saw you when we boarded. I was in 65C" (or something like that. way back in coach, probably a middle seat too). He saw me (the newly hired peon) sitting up front in business class all stretched out watching the regular people file to the back of the bus. Ooops.

Even after I explained I was not feeling well the last day in Germany and bought the upgrade with sky miles, it was still a little awkward. I was laughing on the inside. He was outdone by my travel ninja skills.

I have some good friends up the road in Gardner that used to throw a great party about this time every year. If you ever get stuck in that area for a reset, find a way to visit Reelfoot Lake. That lake was formed by earthquakes in the 1800's that caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards for three days and form the lake. The visitor center has some really interesting stuff in there about the history and how the riverbed has moved over hundreds of years.

If you're not mobile enough for that, there's always Dixie Gun Works. The name kind of gives away what they sell there, but they specialize in antiques. They also have a ton of other historical stuff in there (books and other artifacts). Definitely not a quick visit kind of store.

Ready to head out tomorrow to Hammond, LA. Truck is done and hopefully fixed right this time. Pickup isn't until 1500 so I would probably be smart to just reserve a spot at the Petro if I plan on parking tomorrow. Then I'll shook on up to Ottawa......Kansas, not Canada.

    Rocks Thanks this.

He likes it. Haven't been with him during a thunderstorm with it on yet but he used to whine whenever police or ambulance sirens went off. He didn't the other day. Seems to calm him down and he doesn't try to remove it.

This Wal-Mart has no overnight parking signs but nobody seems to care. Local police cruised by and said nothing.

If asked I would leave and go park at the shipper.
