Maybe that's why I am not a good backer...I am a city "girl".... born in a big city, raised in small apartments... no contacts with farmers or truckers when I was young... My first vehicle was a Volkswagen Beetle that dad gave me when I was 18 and entered college... but I returned it to him cause I didn't have enough money for the fuel...

I have a '71 super beetle. at one of the lower points in my life I even lived in it over a winter. that was no fun given the lack of heat and space in it lol i'll always keep that car for what it means and to always remind me of where I was and what it took to get where I am now. 506,000 miles on it and it's never had the engine opened up and still runs like a top to this day. it has a spot of honor in the building now.RedForeman, TruckDuo, tsavory and 2 others Thank this. -

Hey FM.. You must be master backer...
I believe I would be a much better backer if I would at least do it more often... But the truth is that I become "timid" and avoid difficult parking spots at truck stops... and sooooo many times I choose taking my breaks at rest areas instead...
I can understand your "emotional attachment" to your Beetle...My dad feels the same for his... the one that I returned... He has changed practically everything in that car several times.... not sure about the engine though... but it used to be Alcohol and he changed it to gasoline... I gave him another vehicle but he insists in keeping his Beetle till he passes away....
flyingmusician and tsavory Thank this. -
it's awesome car. easy to work on too....but I found out the hard way even though you can do it easily, the transmission doesn't like it when you float the gears in it lol I did have to put a transmission in it but that was my fault for being young and dumb and thinking it was cool cause I could float it.
my dad bought it new and then I got it years later. another thing he was hard on us about was taking care of things. fluids, belts, filters ect and religiously adhering to maintenance intervals. everything we have lasts forever but that's what happens when you take care of things.
I like backing. I seek out the difficult backs because they're a challenge although if I have an empty lot I will be lazy and do a pull through. it's all in what you're familiar with I guess. I've been backing things for so long it's just second nature now....although I will admit the little trailer behind the lawnmower whips my ### every time. when I get to where I can back the lawnmower trailer without it wrapping up and jackknifing (every time lol) THEN i'll be the master backer heheheheRocks Thanks this. -
my excuse is my cousin
I was allowed to drive the 29 model A ford on the beach by myself when i was 10 -
My dad LOVES his 1981 Beetle... it needs a new battery.... it has been parked for quite a while... He wanted me to try to start it... I put some gasoline in the carburetor but after two attempts I gave up... Dad used to pamper and take good care of his vehicles but now that he is on a wheelchair, can't walk and can't use his left arm, it becomes very difficult... Nobody to do things for him... unless he pays someone... and even then...
not the same...

HEY! BTW, there was a HUGE celebration today in Rio de Janeiro... they were celebrating Rio's 450 years Anniversary.
Although that's my "home town"... where I was born and raised, I couldn't care less... IMO Rio is dangerous, unsafe, filthy, very polluted, high crime, full of slackers, rascals, bums, pickpockets, drugs, prostitution... surrounded by slums everywhere...
Anyway, I'll be going there this week... -
My dad's 1971 Super beetle was destined to be my car until he was in an accident. The coolest thing about that car was the fuel tank. The original tank developed a leak and my dad converted an old Coors beer keg into a fuel tank. Losing the keg deposit was cheaper than a new fuel tank. It could only be filled and level checked by opening the hood (he used a wood dowel to check the level) and it always caught the attention of at least one person at the gas station who recognized the shape of a Coors beer keg.
Looked like this one. Just imagine it on its side with a cap installed on the side and fuel lines attached on the bottom.
