You're not suppose to use personal conveyance for those purposes even if the company allowed it. DOT will light you up if caught.

We have line 5 but have to get approval first. If we are looking for a safe haven we continue to drive and send safety a message why we went over hours. Normally if it's less then 30 minutes. You won't hear a thing from safety.

I've never seen a line 5 on log page in over 40 years of this.....yet all the newbies claim its all us ol outlaws what created these new rules(which of course shows how lil they no bout this biz)but I find it cute that all the megas that really caused all this have created themselves a whole new line on a puter log.......allow them to Legally CHEAT.....more things change more they stay the same.....;)
    Meanwhile......
I got my toes in da water....### in the sand....not a care in the world a cold beer in my hand....life is good today....life is good today.....:)

It's not cheating and since there was no 14 hr clock 40 years ago. There wouldn't be a need for a line 5. With proper trip planning you very seldom will ever need to use it.

It's pretty much for the reefer boys and gals sitting 20 hours at a plant and they would like to get something to snack on 10 minutes down the road since they didn't plan on them taking forever for that cow to pass away.

I've probably used it 5 times in the 5 years I been at this company.

Pssss.... you and I know that... but don't say it out loud... I try to avoid it as much as I can and have told Safety boss lady that too but she swears it's "legal"... 20 miles is all we are allowed to go though... And considering most DOT officers I have met out there can't even understand how to read elog, I rather have an off-duty driving that doesn't look like a violation cause it doesn't go over my 11 or my 14 than something that will go over my hrs....

When I was with my former co. which was a mega carrier, and was on paper, sometimes I would drive on personal conveyance, if I was not under a load, was bobtail only, were not "advancing" towards the customer or doing any business related run... I would be on line one and would make a note saying I drove for so many mins.

Technically Line 5 is for O/O's who use their truck outside of the job. Like shopping during a 34 or bobtailing to the house. Its not even supposed to be an option for a company driver.

Then again there wouldn't be a line 5 if their wasn't elogs. It's amusing when you think about it.
