Lol @ a simple rule and its 100,000 interpretations. Funny how in this jj Keller article it has nothing about O/O.

Authorization? It is ultimately the company’s responsibility to authorize or not authorize personal use of the company’s CMVs, although the DOT does not require written authorization. Motor carriers should check with their insurers to discuss coverage issues, and have policies and training in place so that drivers know exactly when they can use company CMVs for personal conveyance

Personal Conveyance and the ELD Proposal…

Personal Conveyance is mentioned in the FMCSA’s Supplemental Proposal, which was published on March 28, 2014, that mandates ELDs for most drivers of CMVs that currently log.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The proposal says that ELDs may be set up to allow drivers to put themselves in a special driving category called “personal use.” When a driver selects this option, the ELD will record the time as off duty until the driver de-selects the option.(so there is no line 5, just offduty to keep e log from starting clock when driving)

The FMCSA doesn’t plan to set a threshold of distance or time, but officials can and will use the data from the ELD to determine whether the special category was appropriately used by the driver.

Several commenters to the proposal have requested that the FMCSA take the opportunity, through the rulemaking process, to better define personal conveyance.

I'm not trying to interpret anything....I said technically which doesn't mean #### in the real world. I'm simply stating that line 5 was created as a way for people who need the truck for personal use to be able to use it.

Perhaps instead of saying O/O I should have said owner of the truck...which could also mean company. I do know that a company driver cannot use line 5 unless the company says it's okay...finding a safe haven is never a valid reason to use line 5. Although I won't confirm or deny if I ever used it for those purposes

That's a better explanation. Since some O/O run from elogs like its the plague. Yes a safety manager telling somebody to falsify logs to get to a safe haven should be fired. Please don't let this happen again. I'd hate to have to spank you sir.

Ya its been a long time since I went over. If it's less then 10 minutes I won't even send a message. But you can lose safety bonus for the quarter if you go over Twice I think at my company. Think I've only missed my safety bonus once or twice.

They actually suspended offduty driving for a year or so because so many were abusing it. Can't remember how long it's been back . They will also put you on the drive line if you use it without permission and that really jacks your log up. Happened to me once.

There was this guy in line at the Walmart being very impatient. Somebody left the window and he goes up to it and she says " there a sign that says stand behind the line and wait to be called" he grumbles and stomps his feet and I'm sure it made them go slower. Finally the other lady calls him to the window and for some reason. The first thing she says is," did you open your doors" he was like no! In a heavy Eastern European accent. Then she says we can't help you until you open your doors. So he storms off. Those ladies had a field day once he left. How are we going to unload you if your doors are closed. You can only guess what color and type of truck he was driving.

My logbook has been stuck on line one for over a month. I have so much safety oozing out of my pores, I need a bath just thinking about it.

I find it kind of funny that it's the ELD zealots who are the first to rationalize exceptions and whatnot, while labelling everyone on paperlogs that rounds off for 15 minute segments as reckless HOS cheaters. As-if having proof spit from a computerized device makes that safer.

You'll be fine for the most part. The problem will arise if God forbid you are involved in a fatality accident. And that includes the drunk guy who is totally at fault who rear ends you at 100MPH.
